MILTON, Mass. (March 30, 2016) - The Western New England University men's tennis team rolled to a 9-0 victory over Curry College this afternoon in its Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener.ÂÂ
Winners of two consecutive matches, the Golden Bears improve to 4-1 (1-0 CCC) this season, while Curry drops to 0-6 (0-1 CCC) with the setback.ÂÂ
The No. 1 doubles tandem of senior co-captain
Andres Otero (Caracas, Venezuela) and freshman
Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) set the tone for Western New England, posting an 8-4 win over Toma Blatchford/Richie Hefler. Otero and Kohut also cruised to victory in their respective singles matches, as Otero defeated Blatchford 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 and Kohut earned a 6-0, 6-0 result over Michael Mathieu at No. 4.ÂÂ
Also winning in straight sets was sophomore
Kevin Yawgel (Cromwell, Conn.), who topped Sergie Evans 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
Senior co-captain
Alexander Sause (Cusago, Italy) and classmateÂÂ
Chris Spear (Windsor, Conn.) teamed up for an 8-1 triumph at No. 2 doubles, defeating Andrew Hegarty/Mathieu, while Sause posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Hefler at No. 2 singles and Spear followed with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Hegarty at No. 3 singles.
Rounding out Western New England's singles lineup was freshman
Michael Tran (West Haven, Conn.), who earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Daniel Ritucci at No. 5. Sophomore
Nick Raschilla (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and freshman
Drew Berg (Wilbraham, Mass.) were also victorious at No. 3 doubles, defeating Segie Evans/Nikar Akkawi, 8-0.
The Golden Bears will be back in action on Saturday with their home opener against Gordon, which is scheduled for noon.ÂÂ
