Box Score Golden Bears drop opening set before winning three straight to earn road win
MILTON, Mass. (September 20, 2016) – The Western New England University volleyball team opened Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-19) victory over Curry College this evening at Katz Gymnasium.
Top Performers
• Junior middle hitter Carly Skibinski (Milford, N.J.) led all players with a match-high nine kills on an impressive .538 hitting percentage.
• Freshman outside hitter Ashley Matthews (Salem, N.H.) turned in a solid all-around effort with five kills, five digs and a match-high four service aces.
• Senior setter Jenna Leuck (Dumont, N.J.) handed out 24 assists to go with five digs, three aces and a solo block.
• Sophomore outside hitter Grace Stafford (West Yarmouth, Mass.) contributed seven kills and ten digs for the Colonels.
Match Review
• After dropping the opening frame 25-22, the Golden Bears responded with a victory in the second set by the same score.
• Western New England went up 2-1 in the match with a convincing 25-16 win in set three.
• The Golden Bears opened up a 10-2 lead early in the fourth frame, but Curry posted a 6-0 run to close the gap to 10-8. The back-and-forth continued as Western New England claimed ten of the next 12 points to claim a ten point advantage. Curry continued to fight back with a 7-0 run, but the Golden Bears closed out the set to seal the victory.

Western New England (8-3, 1-0 CCC) will be right back in action tomorrow night, as the Golden Bears return home to host Eastern Nazarene at 7 p.m. Curry (4-4, 0-1 CCC) will also be in action tomorrow night against Gordon.
