Golden Bears Fall to Gordon in CCC Tournament, 5-1

Surawski and O'Neill earn 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles

WENHAM, Mass. (April 29, 2017) – The sixth-seeded Western New England University men's tennis team was eliminated from the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament with a 5-1 loss to No. 3 seed Gordon College on Saturday afternoon at the Brigham Complex.

Top Performers
• Freshmen Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Daniel O'Neill (Branford, Conn.) were responsible for Western New England's lone win of the match with their 8-4 triumph at No. 2 doubles.

Match Review
• After Gordon claimed a 1-0 lead via Jonathan Frink and Peter Godwin's 8-2 win over sophomore Michael Tran (West Haven, Conn.) and freshman Griffin Arnold (Meriden, Conn.) at No. 3 doubles, Western New England evened the score as Surawski and O'Neill were victorious at No. 2 against Mike D'Antuono and Eric Kim. The Fighting Scots took a 2-1 lead into singles play, however, after Mason Casady and Nate Lookwhy defeated freshman David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and sophomore Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) 8-6 at No. 1 doubles.
• Gordon took control of the match in singles play, with Frink posting a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Surawski at No. 3 and Godwin earning a 6-2, 6-1 result over senior Vu Nguyen (Springfield, Mass.) at No. 6 before Kim sealed the victory for the Fighting Scots with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Arnold at No. 5.

Western New England's season comes to a close at 9-9, while Gordon (16-5) advances to the CCC semifinals on Wednesday, where the Fighting Scots will take on No. 2 seed Nichols.
