Fast Start Propels No. 8 UNE to 8-1 Win over Western New England

Box Score

Bohatiuk nets first career goal for Golden Bears

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 10, 2018) – The No. 8 nationally ranked University of New England ice hockey team scored five first period goals in an eventual 8-1 victory over Western New England University on Saturday evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Olympia Ice Center.

Top Performers
Making his collegiate debut, freshman forward Marko Bohatiuk (Bensalem, Pa.) scored Western New England's lone goal with an assist from classmate Lliam Christiano (Trumbull, Conn.).

UNE freshman Aaron Aragon (Whittier, Calif.) tallied two goals for the Nor'easters, while senior Brady Fleurent (Biddeford, Maine) and junior Ryan Bloom (Northville, Mich.) both posted three-point efforts with one goal and two assists apiece.

Game Review
Aragon opened the scoring for the Nor'easters 4:05 into the contest, but Western New England answered off the ensuing faceoff as Bohatiuk beat UNE sophomore netminder Ben Churchfield (Newcastle, England) after receiving a feed from Christiano.

The visitors controlled the remainder of the period, however, as they scored four unanswered goals to open up a 5-1 cushion at the first intermission.

Aragon, Bloom and sophomore Derek Mecrones (Medford, Mass.) all found the back of the net in the second period to extend UNE's lead to 8-1.

Neither team scored over the final 20 minutes of play as the Nor'easters completed the weekend sweep of the Golden Bears.

Notes
• UNE outshot Western New England 50-21, including 25-9 in the first period.
• The Golden Bears held a 40-25 advantage in the faceoff circle, led by sophomore Anthony Frati (Churchville, N.Y.) and junior Corey Kennedy (Clemmons, N.C.), who won 12 draws each.

Up Next
Next Friday, Western New England (0-5, 0-4 CCC) hosts Wentworth, while UNE (3-1, 3-1 CCC) travels to Curry.
