Golden Bears Defeat Norwich in Season Opener, 7-2

Kalmer, Gordon & Russell post wins in singles and doubles play

NORTHFIELD, Vt. (March 6, 2018) –
The Western New England University men's tennis team opened its 2018 campaign with a 7-2 victory over Norwich University on Tuesday evening at Shapiro Field House. 

Top Performers
• Western New England was led by sophomore David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and freshman Max Gordon (Middleton, Mass.) and Matthew Russell (Auburn, Mass.), who were victorious in both singles and doubles play.

• Alexi Gilmore and Sam Beiter picked up singles wins for the Cadets.

Match Review
Western New England took control of the match with wins at all three doubles flights.

Kalmer and junior Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) posted an 8-4 triumph at No. 1 over Dylan Ackerman and Gilmore, while Gordon and junior Michael Tran (West Haven, Conn.) defeated Beiter and Hadley Ellis 8-5 at No. 2, and the duo of Russell and freshman Peter Stegemann (Falmouth, Maine) rolled to an 8-1 result over Maddy Muthukumaraswany and Timothy Birnbaum at No. 3.

Norwich's two wins came courtesy of Gilmore, who topped Stegemann 6-4, 3-6, 10-1 at No. 2 singles, and Beiter, who edged Tran 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.

Kalmer won 6-3, 6-3 over Ackerman at No. 1, and Gordon claimed a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Muthukumaraswany at No. 4, while sophomore Griffin Arnold (Meriden, Conn.) and Russell came out on top at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

Up Next
Western New England (1-0) will be back in action on Friday, March 16 with an exhibition match against Onondaga Community College in Orlando, Florida. Norwich (0-1) travels to Castleton on Thursday.
