Gordon Downs Western New England, 7-2

Kalmer & Arnold post singles wins for Golden Bears  

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 18, 2018) –
The Western New England University men's tennis team absorbed a 7-2 setback at the hands of Gordon College on Wednesday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Volvo Outdoor Courts. 

Western New England's two wins in the match came courtesy of sophomores David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and Griffin Arnold (Meriden, Conn.). Kalmer improved to 6-0 in CCC play with his 6-4, 6-3 victory over Mason Casady at No. 1 singles, while Arnold registered a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Peter Godwin at No. 5.

The Fighting Scots were victorious at the other four singles slots, as Nathan Lookwhy beat sophomore Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) 6-1, 6-2 at No .2, Jonathan Frink topped freshman Max Gordon (Middleton, Mass.) 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3, Michael D'Antuono defeated junior Michael Tran (West Haven, Conn.) 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, and Will Jeffreys earned a 6-0, 6-2 result over freshman Matthew Russell (Auburn, Mass.) at No. 6.

Gordon established a 3-0 lead in the match with wins at all three doubles flights. At No. 1, Kalmer and junior Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) took an 8-2 loss to Casady and Lookwhy. D'Antuono and Godwin edged Surawski and Gordon 8-6 at No. 2, while Frink and Kristopher Marineau downed the freshmen duo of Russell and Peter Stegemann (Falmouth, Maine) 8-2 at No. 3.

Western New England (7-5, 2-4 CCC) remains at home to host Salve Regina on Saturday, while Gordon (6-9, 3-3 CCC) will face the Seahawks on Friday in Manchester-by-the-Sea.
