Golden Bears Earn CCC Win over Curry, 9-0

Western New England improves to 2-1 in conference play

MILTON, Mass. (April 8, 2018) –
The Western New England University men's tennis team rolled to a 9-0 victory over Curry College on Sunday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Big Nine Courts. 

Western New England cruised through doubles play to open up a 3-0 lead in the match. Sophomore David Kalmer (Slingerlands, Conn.) and junior Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) teamed up for an 8-4 win over Aidan Roach and Dawson Stento at No. 1, while the Golden Bears' No. 2 doubles duo of sophomore Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) and freshman Max Gordon (Middleton, Mass.) registered an 8-0 victory over Richie Hefler and Nicholas Piotrowski.

In the final doubles slot, freshmen Peter Stegemann (Falmouth, Maine) and Matthew Russell (Auburn, Mass.) claimed a 9-0 result over Zach Muller and Daniel Ritucci.

At the top singles flight, Kalmer rallied to earn a 4-6, 6-2, 10-6 triumph over Roach. Surawski topped Stento 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2, and Gordon defeated Hefler 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3.

Junior Michael Tran (West Haven, Conn.) posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Piotrowski at No. 4, while sophomore Griffin Arnold (Meriden, Conn.) captured a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5. Rounding out the six singles positions, Russell defeated Daniel Ritucci 6-0, 6-2.

Western New England (7-2, 2-1 CCC) travels to Nichols on Tuesday, while Curry (0-11, 0-3 CCC) continues its five-match homestand against Becker on Monday.
