Golden Bears Outlasted by Salve Regina in Overtime, 4-3.

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – Coming off an impressive victory on Friday night, the Western New England ice hockey team nearly knocked off Salve Regina University for the second night in a row, but fell 4-3 in overtime on Saturday night at Portsmouth Abbey Ice Rink. 

Top Performers
Western New England received goals from senior defenseman Connor Graham (Norfolk, Mass.) , senior forward David Kleyman (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and senior forward Matt O'Dea (Orland Park, Ill.). Corey Kennedy assisted on two Golden Bear goals. Anthony Frati also picked up a helper.

In net, junior goalie Kyle Carducci (Rocky Hill, Conn.) finished with 40 saves.

The Seahawks were led by Colin Clapton, who finished with two goals. Danny Eruizone and J.J. Layton also added goals for Salve Regina.

Game Review

Salve Regina struck first with a goal from Eruzione that was set up by Frankie Sullivan and Matthew Dillon. That was the lone goal in the period. Off a power play, Clapton would strike the back of the net early in the second period for the Seahawks, making the score 2-0 Salve Regina.

The Golden Bears would come roaring back with two goals over a six minute span. The first coming from Graham off a feed from Frati. Then, the equalizer came from Kleyman courtesy of Kennedy and Steve Beck to even the score at 2-2.

Early into the third period, Clapton would score off a wraparound to push the Seahawks ahead 3-2.

At 8:46, Western New England would respond again off a powerplay goal from O'Dea that came early into the man up situation to make the score 3-3, forcing overtime.

In the extra period, sophomore forward Paul Boutoussov would make a move on a rebounded shot that Carducci deflected that would look like a goal, but would eventually be waved off by the officials.  Carducci finished the game with 40 saves. Later in overtime, Salve would strike off a deep slapshot from Layton that would make the score 4-3 in favor of Seahawks. 

Notes

  • O'Dea has 19 points on the season, 11 goals and eight assists.
  • The Seahawks outshot Western New England, 44-15.
