Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 12, 2021) – The Western New England University women's basketball team used a strong second quarter to defeat Gordon, 65-55, on Friday evening at the Anthony S. Caprio Alumni Healthful Living Center.
Top Performers
Senior Emily Scurka led the Golden Bears in scoring with 16 points. Junior Julia Quinn scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds. Sophomore Abby Garaban and first-year Kya McComb both scored 10 points off the bench.
Freshman Caroline Sikkink led the Fighting Scots with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while senior Abby Vampatella scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Game Review
The Fighting Scots took a 10-4 lead midway through the first quarter before the Golden Bears came back and cut the deficit to one, with the score at 15-14 going into the second quarter.
Western New England carried the momentum into the second quarter to take a huge lead over Gordon. With the score at 20-20 with 7:12 remaining in the first half, the Golden Bears went on a 16-6 run to take a 36-26 lead into halftime.
The Golden Bears pushed the lead to as many as 14 in the third quarter, before the Fighting Scots cut the deficit to nine going into the final quarter. A made jump shot from Vampatella with 3:16 remaining cut the lead down to three, but that is the closest they got as Western New England hit crucial free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
