SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 13, 2021) – A made jump shot in the final seconds from senior Alex Sikorski gave the Western New England University men's basketball team a 72-70 victory over Gordon on Saturday afternoon at the Anthony S. Caprio Alumni Healthful Living Center.
Top Performers
First-year Gavin Greene led the Golden Bears with 19 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Sikorski scored 15 points, including the game winner. Junior Kenny Flynn scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds while senior Zachary Tavitian had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Freshman Michael Makiej led the Fighting Scots with 14 points off the bench. Senior Parker Omslaer, sophomore Drew Thibeault, and sophomore Justin Yu each scored 10 points.
Game Review
The Golden Bears started off strong, taking an early 14-8 lead after Flynn converted an and-one opportunity. A layup from Makiej with 6:48 remaining in the first half tied the game at 20. With the score at 22-22, Western New England went on an 8-0 run to close out the first half.
The Golden Bears extended their lead to 41-27 with 14:30 remaining in the game after a layup from Flynn. The Fighting Scots continued to chip away at the Western New England lead throughout the remainder of the game, eventually tying at 70 with just nine seconds left after a layup from Omslaer. On the next possession, Sikorski pulled up near the baseline to hit the game winner with just over two seconds remaining.
