Box Score MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (September 8, 2021) – The Golden Bears field hockey team hit the road for the first time this season to challenge the Cardinals of Wesleyan (Conn.) this evening and came up short falling 6-1.

How It Happened
The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead putting the Golden Bears on their heels initially. Wesleyan secured a corner in the first seven minutes and scored off a hard shot up the middle. Just over two minutes later on a second penalty corner, the Cardinals struck again to take an early 2-0 lead just over halfway through the first quarter. The Golden Bears were able to settle into the game and not allow the Cardinals to score again in the first quarter heading into the second down 2-0. Ten minutes into the second quarter on another penalty corner, the Cardinals found the back of the cage again to take a 3-0 lead that they held onto heading into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Golden Bears changed the tone of the game controlling more possession. Just about halfway through the third quarter the Golden Bears earned their second penalty corner of the game. Taylor Klesyk was able to send the ball past the goalkeeper in a scramble while Ali Martin earned the assist for the Golden Bears first goal of the game to get within two (3-1). The third quarter continued with the Golden Bears maintaining offensive momentum until in the final seconds the Cardinals earned a breakaway and slipped the ball past Laura Dion to lead 4-1 after the third quarter.
The Cardinals scored two more times in the fourth quarter to earn themselves the 6-1 win and serve the Golden Bears their first loss of the season.
