Golden Bears Drop Non-Conference Tilt to Amherst

SPRINGFIELD Mass. (April 20, 2022) – The Western New England Softball team lost one at home to the Amherst College Mammoths with a final score of 11-1 in fine innings of play.

Records:

  • Western New England: 17-11
  • Amherst College: 16-6

How It Happened:

In the top of the first inning, the Mammoths picked up three runs with two RBIs from Dani Torres Werra and Sadie Pool. Golden Bears Taylor Keegan was walked to start the bottom of the inning. Kailey Carrano hit a single up the middle for an RBI and Keegan Collected the run. WNE was behind 3-1 entering the second. The Golden Bears held the Mammoths without a run to start off the second but didn't capitalize in the bottom. The third inning was where Amherst dominated. Two singles, a hit batter, and a wild pitch took the Mammoths back around all the bases, then a double for two RBIs from Randi Finkeistein gave them two more on the board. There were two more runs before Amherst picked up an out in the inning, and one more before the top concluded. They had a total of seven runs in the third and took a lead of 10-1. The last run of the ballgame was earned by Amherst in the top of the fifth on a Sac Fly. The Golden Bears had the lost on the evening with a 11-1 final score.

Inside The Diamond:

  • Western New England was led by Kailey Carrano who was 2-2 at bat and had the only RBI
  • Starting Pitcher Emilia Garcia took the loss, pitching in 2.0 innings with 15 batters faced, allowing six runs with one strikeout.
  • Relief Pitcher Ava Blanchard pitched in 3.0 innings, faced 16 batters allowed five runs and recorded one strikeout.
  • The Golden Bears had one run in two hits and allowed 11 hits on 13 runs.

Up Next: The Golden Bears are back on the road for their next pair of games. They will be taking on Gordon College in CCC play Friday, April 22, with a 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. start.

Amherst College remain on the road for their next ballgame on the same day, where they will be traveling to Williams College for a 5 p.m. game.
