Softball Takes Games Two over Springfield College, Beebe Reaches 100 Strikeout Plateau

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 5, 2022) – The Western New England Softball team took one win of two against the Springfield College Pride, taking a loss in the first game with a score of 10-1. WNE won the second match up 5-1 and Junior Pitcher Megan Beebe earned her career 100th strikeout.

Game 1: Springfield College 10, Western New England 1

The Pride got on the scoreboard early in the top of the first. Their first hit was a double to left field. They Picked up the RBI a couple of hits later before their third out to give them a 1-0 start. The Golden Bears got one hit in the bottom of the first but picked up their third out quickly to end the inning. To add to their lead, Springfield went for five runs in five hits in the top of the third. Pride's Alli Olsen picked up an RBI on a double to left center, it was followed by another RBI and then a Homerun from Kristen Acocella that earned her two RBIs. After relief pitcher Ava Blanchard came in for the Golden Bears, the Pride still got another RBI before three consecutive outs to close out the top of the inning with a 6-0 lead.

The pride earned two more runs in the top of the fifth and the Golden Bears finally completed a run in the bottom. Alex Ferriouolo hit a double to right field, and advanced to third on Madison Mason's out trying to run to second base. Cori Rizzo picked up the RBI while Ferriouolo ran past home plate. The inning closed with the Pride still ahead 8-1. Springfield College's Acocella hit another homerun for two RBIs that gave them a 10-1 advantage entering the bottom of the sixth. The Golden Bears did not earn another run and the game ended after six innings with a final score of 10-1, Springfield Pride.

Inside The Diamond:

  • Western New England's Cori Rizzo and Kaleigh Blades were both 1-2 at bat, Rizzo had the only RBI for The Golden Bears in the first game of the day.
  • Alex Ferriouolo completed the one run for WNE and went 1-3.
  • The Golden Bears scored one run in four hits, giving up 10 runs in 14 hits.  

Game 2: Western New England 5, Springfield College 1

To start the ballgame, Golden Bears junior pitcher Megan Beebe earned her career 100th strikeout on the first batter for the Pride, she allowed one hit and no runs, and the final out of the top of the inning was also a strikeout. In the bottom, The Golden Bears took a 1-0 lead after Taylor Keegan was walked, Dina DiBlasio singled to left field, Kailey Carrano singled to shortstop, and Alex Ferriouolo was walked for an RBI. Both teams went scoreless in the second and the third. After two strikeouts, a double down the infield line and a double to centerfield RBI put the Pride on the scoreboard and tied up the score 1-1 going into the bottom of the fourth. WNE answered with an RBI from Kaleigh Blades on a single that Paige Baca scored on after running from second base. This gave them the lead back at 2-1. The pride was held to one hit and no runs in the top of the fifth. The Golden Bears bumped up the game lead in the bottom of the inning. A couple of walks, a bunt from Baca and a couple of errors led to Ferriouolo, Cori Rizzo, and Baca reaching home base.  The three runs gave them a 5-1 lead. Another scoreless inning brought the game into the top of the seventh. The Pride picked up two quick outs, one hit in, and then they were struck out for the conclusion of the ballgame. The Golden Bears won the second game with a 5-1 final score.     

Around The Diamond:

  • Western New England's Dina DiBlasio and Kailey Carrano were 2-4 at bat
  • Both Kaleigh Blades and Alex Ferriouolo picked up RBIs. Lizzie Weston hit the only double for WNE in the second game.
  • Starting Pitcher Megan Beebe collected the win and earned her 100th strikeout. She pitched in all seven innings, faced 31 batters, had eight strikeouts, allowed seven hits and one run.
  • Western New England scored five runs in seven hits on the game.

Up Next:

  • The Golden Bears return to the road for their next set of games. They travel to Suffolk University to face the Rams Saturday, April 9 for a Noon and 2 p.m. ballgame time.
  • The Pride are also on the road for their next pair of games, Friday April 8, where they will take on Clark University for a 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. start time.
