Gulls Top WNE Football 24-21 in CCC Opener

BEVERLY, Mass. (October 14, 2023) – The Western New England football team fell short on the road in the conference opener on Saturday afternoon as the 18th-ranked Gulls of Endicott College defeated Western New England by a final score of 24-21.

Records:
  • Western New England: 3-3, 0-1 CCC
  • 18 Endicott College: 5-1, 1-0 CCC
How it Happened:
Western New England would see the Gulls open the game with an 11-play, 69-yard drive capped off with a four-yard run, giving Endicott a quick 7-0 lead. The Golden Bears would come back and respond with seven points of their own in the first quarter. Greg Perry would grab a 12-yard pass while Ryan Larson snagged a nine-yard pass as Western New England began to march down the field on the Gulls. Greg Perry would record three catches on the drive, including a ten-yard touchdown catch from Conrad Swanson, giving Western New England their first points of the contest.

The Gulls wrapped up their next drive using 14 plays and 66 yards to grab three points when a 24-yard field goal was converted by the Gulls, taking the lead again, this time by three points at 10-7. Western New England would take their first lead of the game when Conrad Swanson found Pat Harrigan for a 29-yard touchdown pass to give WNE a 14-10 lead. On the drive, Swanson would rush for 19 yards before finding Tyler Borwhat for a 30-yard catch. The drive would be wrapped up with a five-play, 89-yard drive to give the Golden Bears a 14-10 lead on the catch by Harrigan. The Golden Bears would make a defensive stop on the Gulls, forcing the hosts to turn the ball over on downs on a key tackle from Jake Chiasson and Cam Leblanc. A field goal kick at the end of the quarter from Andrew Havens would not be converted on, as the Gulls would block the opportunity for WNE to get a seven-point lead before the half. The Golden Bears would lead 14-10 at the end of the second quarter.

Western New England would be off the field in a quick three and out to open the third quarter, while the Gulls would convert for a touchdown in their opening drive of the second half. Endicott would grab a three-yard touchdown run to retake the lead, taking a 17-14 lead. The Gulls defense would begin to ramp up, again forcing Western New England off the field quickly after a 21-yard run from Ryan Carlson would be all the momentum the Golden Bears would be able to generate on their next drive of the contest. No scoring other than the seven points for Endicott would be recorded, with Endicott driving to open the fourth quarter.

The home team would take their biggest lead of the game with a 34-yard touchdown rush, giving Endicott a 24-14 lead. Western New England needed a response drive and got exactly that, as both Conrad Swanson and Tyler Millerick would combine at quarterback for seven Golden Bears points to get the blue and gold back in the game. Swanson opened the drive with a 19-yard pass to Ryan Larson. Tyler Millerick would cap off the drive with 25 rushing yards and an eight-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Larson, giving Western New England points on an important drive in the game. Both defensive would make a key stop, though the Golden Bears would see Endicott hog the ball for the final 4:57 of the game, not being able to come up with a defensive stop on third and four and fourth and one as the Gulls would come away with the 24-21 win.
