Gordon Nets Two Late Goals, Hand WNE Their First Conference Loss of the Season

Springfield, Mass. (October 14, 2023) - The Women's Soccer Team welcomed in the Fighting Scots of Gordon College. The Golden Bears were coming off a 1-0 win against Suffolk University and were looking to improve their conference record to 6-0. The first half saw plenty of back-and-forth action but no goal. Gordon's Eowyn Lapp and Ava Forbes-Smith would net a goal each in the second half, helping Gordon take down the Golden Bears 2-0.

Records:

  • Western New England: 8-3-2 (5-1-0)
  • Gordon College: 6-4-3 (2-1-2)

How it Happened:

The game got underway with Molly McLaughlin and Emily Bengtson in net for the Golden Bears and Fighting Scots, respectively. The Fighting Scots came out playing hard and taking advantage of opportunities early. Kendra Wentling had the first shot on goal for the team in the 5th minute. It was on the right side of the goal, but McLaughlin was able to make the save. Wentling went for goal again in the 7th minute, but it was blocked by the Golden Bear defense. The first shot for the Golden Bears came in the 10th minute when Gabby Sansone sent a shot wide of the net. Taylor Talesnick would answer with a shot over the Golden Bear net that made McLaughlin watch it go out. That was countered by Emma French, sending a shot wide left of the net. The 23rd minute saw Wentling challenge McLaughlin again. However, the shot was saved by McLaughlin, and the game went on. French had the first shot on net for the Golden Bears in the 27th minute. Bengtson would make the save to keep the score tied. That was followed by two shots from Gordon. Lily Ford and Alexa Weindorf both sent shots wide left of the net. Then, Catriona Galvin had a shot in the 32nd minute that went wide of the net.

The half would end with two major opportunities from the Fighting Scots. In the 41st minute, Jesse Skov challenged McLaughlin, who made the save. Then, Rachel Mincone would test McLaughlin in the final minute of the half. McLaughlin made the save and kept the score tied going into the break. At the end of the first half, Gordon led in shots (9-3) and shots on goal (4-1). WNE led in saves (4-1), corner kicks (3-1), and fouls (4-2). The score was tied 0-0 at halftime.

After the break, the Golden Bears made a strong start. In the 50th minute, Isabella Montalvo sent a shot at the top right corner of the net. Bengtson made the save. After both teams sent the ball back and forth and made moves toward goal, Lindsay Reidy had a major opportunity for the Golden Bears. In the 60th minute, Reidy sent a shot towards the top half of the goal. Bengtson would make another save and keep the game even at zero. The action stayed in the middle 50 percent of the pitch. Both teams kept pushing towards the other team's goal but were stopped each time. That was until Francie Leffler found Eowyn Lapp in the 77th minute with a pass. Lapp ran up to the ball and sent a right-footed shot past McLaughlin and into the back of the net. Gordon had the lead, 1-0. WNE then had to press, leading to a Montalvo shot that went wide of the net. Ford had a shot on net for the Fighting Scots in the 78th minute.

McLaughlin would make the save. Reidy would answer in the 84th minute with a shot wide of the net. Then, in the 86th minute, Lapp dribbled down the center of the pitch and passed the ball off to Ava Forbes-Smith, who took a touch and sent a left-footed shot into the back of the net. The Fighting Scots doubled their lead to 2-0. Liza Pinette would go for goal later that minute, but Bengtson made the save. Reidy would then send a shot wide in the 88th minute, and the game would finish with a shot by Liza Pinette in the 90th minute. It was on net, but Bengtson made the save to preserve the shutout for the Fighting Scots.

The final stat line showed Gordon leading on shots (12-10) and shots on goal (7-5). Both teams had five saves. WNE had more corner kicks by a score of 6-4 and also had more fouls, 12-8. The Golden Bears fell to the Fighting Scots 2-0, the first conference loss for the Golden Bears this season.
