Molina, Hawes Lead WNE Women’s Volleyball Past Curry

MILTON, Mass. (October 18, 2023) – The Western New England women's volleyball team returned to CCC play on Wednesday evening, sweeping the hosting Colonels of Curry College by a final score of 3-0 to secure their third conference win of the season.

How it Happened:
The Golden Bears and Colonels would fight in the opening set, with the two CCC members trading point for point. Western New England grabbed the first multi-point lead of the game after Yemayma Molina served up a service ace, followed by more superb serving from Ella Soutter, giving Western New England an 8-5 lead. The Golden Bears would mount a five-point lead at 13-8 after back-to-back attack errors from the Colonels. From there, Curry would rattle off four straight points to get within one point of a tie at 13-12. Ella Soutter gave Western New England a two-point lead again at 18-16 on a kill, while Yemayma Molina would continue to dominate on serve, grabbing her second service ace of the match. Alissa Hawes would finish the first set for the Golden Bears with a kill, sending Western New England to a 25-20 victory.

WNE exploded to open the second set when Isabella Procida grabbed the first six points for the Golden Bears on serve, as Curry would record three attack errors while Alissa Hawes would spike two kills to the floor to open up the set. WNE would go up by six three times early before Curry would quickly bring the score down within one again, grabbing six of seven points as WNE held just a 9-8 lead. Western New England would go on a stretch run, scoring six of eight points to take a 15-10 lead. Elizabeth Long and Allissa Hawes would help the Golden Bears continue to roll over the Colonels. With Curry getting within three points of a tie at 19-16, Western New England would score the final six points of the set as Rachel Critz and Yemayma Molina grabbed kills for the Golden Bears, as WNE would close out a 25-16 victory in set two.

Eight straight points would open the third set in favor of the blue and gold, as Becca Mayer would pace the Golden Bears to a huge start in the set. Taylor Geist and Alissa Hawes would help Western New England in the third set, as WNE came away with their biggest lead of the night at 13 points. In the third set, Leah Warren, Ava Cariddi, Zoe Bozzay, and Yemayma Molina would all help WNE defeat Curry 25-12, winning the match by a final score of 3-0.

Inside the Lines:
  • WNE recorded 27 kills in the match and hit at.122 on the match. Alissa Hawes recorded ten kills to lead the way.
  • The Golden Bears notched 12 aces in the win and recorded 43 digs.
  • Taylor Geist recorded 20 assists for Western New England.
  • The Golden Bears are a perfect 12-0 all-time against Curry, dropping just three sets in those 12 matches.
