Field Hockey Drops in Final CCC Regular Season Contest at Endicott

BEVERLY, Mass. (October 20, 2023) – The Western New England field hockey team dropped their final CCC contest of the regular season on Friday night, falling to the Gulls of Endicott College by a final score of 1-0.

How it Happened:
The Golden Bears opened the first quarter with two shots, while the Gulls were held to just one shot, though neither team could find the back of the net. Olivia Eastman gave the Golden Bears their best chance of the night, though Gulls goalkeeper Alexis DeMattia came away with the save, keeping Western New England off the scoreboard.

The Gulls came around with three shots in the second quarter to WNE's one, scoring the only goal in the second quarter when Tori Swanson sent over a pass to Lindsay Burns, who took a quick shot that made it past WNE goalkeeper Ella Henry, giving Endicott a 1-0 lead. The Golden Bears recorded three shots in the opening half, while Endicott came away with four. WNE would not be awarded a penalty corner in the first 30 minutes of the night.

Sarah Johnston opened the second half with a shot that went wide of the net, becoming WNE's best scoring chance early. Ella Henry would come away with two early saves on the Gulls to keep Western New England within striking distance. The Golden Bears would control much of the play in the last half of the third quarter, with Analise Trani and Sarah Johnston coming away with blocked shots as WNE would be awarded two penalty corners, but could not find the twine as Endicott took their 1-0 lead into the final 15 minutes of play.

Endicott took six shots in the first ten minutes of the fourth quarter, with one placed on goal that was stopped by Ella Henry. Western New England would find their offense with under three minutes remaining in the game when Sarah Johnston took a shot that was saved by DeMattia for the Gulls. WNE would get one
final penalty corner with 32 seconds remaining, getting a shot on goal from Haley Kaczka that was stopped and would end the game as the Gulls took the 1-0 win.

  • Sarah Johnston led the way for Western New England, taking three shots and placing one on goal.
  • Lindsay Burns came away with the lone goal for Endicott, her sixth of the season.
