WNE Football Scores 42 Unanswered Points in Blowout Win at UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine (October 28, 2023) – The Western New England football team gave up the first points of the game before dismantling the hosting Nor'easters of the University of New England, defeating the home team 42-7 to grab their second win in CCC play.

Records:
  • Western New England: 5-3, 2-1 CCC
  • University of New England: 6-2, 2-1 CCC
How it Happened:
Western New England would complete just eight passes on the afternoon, relying heavily on their run game as the Golden Bears would run the football down on the Nor'easters to claim victory. Western New England would see an eight-play, 78-yard drive go the Nor'easters way to open the game when Berto Zepeda collected a pass from Jarrett Henault to give UNE the opening 7-0 lead. Western New England's first offensive drive would not go as smoothly as UNE's, as the WNE offense would fumble the ball, handing the ball over to the Nor'easters. On the ensuing drive for UNE, the Nor'easters would make it to the WNE 36-yard line, needing just those 36 yards for another score, though an interception by Ben Caulfield would spark Western New England on both offense and defense. WNE would connect on their longest play of the game when Conrad Swanson sent a 53-yard touchdown pass to Greg Perry, getting the Golden Bears on the scoreboard. The score would remain 7-7 after one quarter of play after Jake Chaisson and Alex Boutin collected a sack to force UNE off the field.

A slow start to the second period would see both teams punt away the football before Western New England would get on the board again after Dillon Kohl, Conrad Swanson, and Ryan Carlson would march down the field with big rushing yards. Kohl started the drive off with a 42-yard rush, followed by a 39-yard rush from Swanson. The drive would end with a Ryan Carlson three-yard touchdown up the middle as Western New England took the 14-7 lead. Another UNE interceptions would send the Golden Bears up with great ball position after Jason Shumilla picked off Jarrett Henault. UNE would get their first takeaway of the game when Tyler Millerick was picked in quick succession, though UNE could do nothing with their ensuing drive. Neither team could score in the final three minutes of the first half, as Western New England took a 14-7 lead after 30 minutes of play.

The Golden Bears would force their third turnover of the game when Dalton Franco forced a fumble by the UNE quarterback, with Cam Leblanc recovering the ball as Western New England would take over at the UNE 11-yard line. Two plays later, WNE was in the end zone again when Dillon Kohl rushed home a three-yard run, giving WNE a 21-7 lead. Western New England's defense would ramp up, taking the Nor'easters off the field in quick succession. Western New England's next offensive drive of the game would result in another seven points when Conrad Swnason ran in an 18-yard touchdown to give the Golden Bears a 28-7 lead. De'Andre Harris would grab a 17-yard pass on the drive, moving WNE down the field. Western New England would force a three and out on the next UNE drive and would threaten for another score to start the fourth quarter, leading 28-7.

It would take nearly half the quarter to get back on the scoreboard, but an eight-play, 48-yard drive would be topped off with a one-yard run from Dillon Kohl as the Golden Bears would continue to pour it on the Nor'easters, taking a 35-7 lead. The Nor'easters offense would have no response to the feisty Golden Bears defense, as the blue and gold would force another three-and-out to get UNE off the field. One final touchdown of the game would go in favor of WNE when Danny Gisonno rushed up the middle for a six-yard scoring, putting the Nor'easters away and sending Western New England to a 42-7 victory over the University of New England, improving to 5-0 all-time against UNE.
