How it Happened:
It took the Owls just 17 minutes to score in the game when the Owls leading goal scorer, Delaney Parker, netted her seventh goal of the season, grabbing the quick 1-0 lead. Western New England would bring in a slew of substitutions that sparked an offensive output from the Golden Bears as the Golden Bears responded to the Owls goal just eight minutes later.
Julia Frappier would find the ball in traffic and deliver the ball to
Emma French, who ripped a shot from outside the box that sailed up and just under the crossbar and into the back of the net, beating Owls GK Kayla Santucci, evening the score at one. Following the goal, both goalkeepers would need to make two saves each to end the half, as
Molly McLaughlin would deny Delaney Parker and Kiana Muratsuka in tight to keep WSU off the scoreboard. Both teams collected ten shots in the first half and five shots on goal. Westfield State held the corner kick edge, 2-1.
Molly McLaughlin needed to make three saves in the first 12 minutes of the second half, as the Owls would press the Golden Bears defense early.
McLaughlin was up to the task, denying Westfield State their scoring chances. The Golden Bears would use that momentum and find the back of the net in the 62
nd minute when
Liza Pinette tallied her fifth goal of the season for Western New England.
Pinette would dribble through the Westfield State defense and take an arching shot that just snuck under the crossbar and into the twine, giving Western New England their first lead of the night, sitting at 2-1.
The Golden Bears were not done there, adding a key insurance goal that would put the Owls behind by two goals. 2:06 later, the Golden Bears would find twine when
Gabby Sansone would send the ball across the box, where
Brynn Murphy was able to stick out her right foot and find the back of the net as the Golden Bears would quickly jump out to a 3-1 lead. In the final 20 minutes of the game, the Owls would press, looking to get back into the contest, though the WNE defense and GK
