Field Hockey Falls in Double Overtime at UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine (October 7. 2023) – The Western New England field hockey team came up short in CCC play, falling in double overtime to the University of New England, dropping a 2-1 contest.

Records:
  • Western New England: 10-2, 1-2 CCC
  • University of New England: 4-8, 2-0 CCC
How it Happened:
Western New England did not attempt a shot in the first quarter of play, with much of the attacking time happening in their defensive zone. Ella Henry would make one save, though a rebound shot would be smashed home by Kate Kelso for the Nor'easters as UNE took a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the contest. UNE would outshoot WNE 4-0 in the frame and take the only two penalty corners in the opening period.

Western New England took their first penalty corner in the opening seconds of the second period, while their opening shot of the game came shortly after when Analise Trani took a shot that was blocked by the UNE defense. From there, the Nor'easters would circle around the cage guarded by Ella Henry and would again take over full momentum of the contest. Henry and the WNE defense would keep UNE off the scoreboard in the second quarter, with the sophomore goalkeeper making three saves in the second quarter. UNE outshot WNE 6-1 in the second and 10-1 in the opening half.

Western New England would find their footing offensively in the third quarter, which resulted in their first goal of the game. After an inserted penalty corner by the Golden Bears' Grace Miguel, Carly-Anna Barba would send a pass to Haley Kaczka, who netted her sixth goal of the season, evening the score at one. UNE would only come up with one shot in the period, while Olivia Eastman would take a shot with just 2:30 remaining in the third quarter, though UNE goalkeeper Dawn DeWeese-Moss would make the save.

Western New England would again dominate the attack in the fourth quarter, getting the majority of the chances. Sarah Johnston would take the lone shot on goal for Western New England with 47 seconds remaining in the quarter, though another UNE save would keep WNE from scoring.

The teams would need extra time to decide a winner. In the first OT period, Western New England would grab two penalty corners and one shot, while UNE took three total shots, one on goal. Neither team could find the back of the net, resulting in another OT frame. UNE would find their offensive pressure in the second OT period, taking eight shots, with six coming on goal. Ella Henry would make five saves, though WNE would find the back of the net after a shot from just inside the arc would dip under the foot of Henry and land into the goal, as UNE would take the win by a final score of 2-1.
