Murphy, Walker, Holt, and Damas Grab Two Points Each, Lead Golden Bears to 4-0 Win

Canton, Mass. (November 18, 2023) - The Golden Bears headed to Canton, Massachusetts, for the second game of their home-and-home series with Curry College. After dropping the home game against the Colonels, the Golden Bears would score two goals in the first period and two in the second to secure a 4-0 win over Curry.

  • Western New England: 3-2-2 (3-2-1)
  • Curry College: 2-4-2 (0-2-2)

How it Happened:

The game got underway with Rieley Jessie-Gerelli in net for the Golden Bears and Soleil Archambeault in net for the Colonels. Hannah Berkowitz won the opening faceoff for the Colonels. The teams went back and forth with shots, with the Golden Bears having a few more shots on goal than the Colonels. The Golden Bears were then called for a penalty 7:41 into the opening period of play. The Colonels had a shot blocked before being called for a penalty, as well. There were no shots by either team before the Golden Bear penalty was up. However, during the Curry penalty, WNE had three shots, with two testing Archambeault. Both shots were saved. Both teams would have shots and go back and forth from side to side on the ice. That was until Ziya Damas gave the Golden Bears the lead with 3:56 left in the first period. Alyssa Murphy poked the puck over to Damas, who skated down the right-hand side of the ice and sent a wrist shot right past the goalie.

The Golden Bears had the lead 1-0. Twelve seconds later, the Golden Bears had two goals. Allison Walker would get the puck deep in the Curry defensive zone. Walker sent a pass to Maggie Holt at the top of the zone, who sent a wrist shot in. The shot was rebounded and sent into the back of the net by Jenna Lynch. The Golden Bears now led 2-0. Curry tried to get one back at the end of the first period by having five out of the final seven shots. However, the Golden Bear defense and Jessie-Gerelli held the Colonels off. Curry led the first period in shots on goal with 12 to the Golden Bears' seven shots. However, the Golden Bears led 2-0 going into the first intermission.

The second period started with a Berkowitz opening faceoff win. Curry started the second period with a flurry of shots. They had 15 of the first 17 shots of the second period. Jessie-Gerelli made save after save, along with the Golden Bear defense, making some blocks and forcing shots to go wide of the target. The Golden Bears would turn the momentum around with a few shots in a row. Then, a penalty was called on Curry, and the Golden Bears were on the power play. The Golden Bears started the power play with three shots, two being on goal. Then, with 8:20 left in the second period, Maggie Holt scored the power play goal. Alyssa Murphy would fend off defenders and pass the puck to Maddie Pope. Pope sent it to Holt, who skated towards the goalie and sent a wrist shot right into the back of the net, and the Golden Bears were leading 3-0. Both teams would continue to get shots off. However, it seemed as if the Golden Bears kept most of the momentum. Then, with 1:55 left in the second period, Ziya Damas made Curry turn over the puck. The puck found Allison Walker, who made a move and netted the fourth goal of the game for the Golden Bears. The Golden Bears had the lead 4-0. Late in the second, the Golden Bears were called for a penalty and would test Jessie-Gerelli once before being called for a penalty as time expired in the period. The second period saw Curry lead in shots on goal again. This time, the stat line showed 16 shots on goal to 11 in favor of the Colonels. However, two more goals were scored by the Golden Bears, and the score was 4-0 at the second break.

Allison Walker won the faceoff to start the third period. The shots on goal started 2-1 in favor of Curry. The Golden Bears would answer with two that Archambeault saved during the Curry penalty. Both teams would continue to get shots off. Archambeault and Jessie-Gerelli turned each shot aside, and no goals were scored. Curry was called for a penalty with 11:04 left in the game. The Golden Bears had five shots during the power play, with one being saved by Archambeault. The game would continue after that with Curry calling a timeout and then both teams sending multiple shots at net. However, no more goals were scored, and the Golden Bears would pick up their third regular-time win of the season by a score of 4-0. Total shots on goal during the game saw Curry outshoot the Golden Bears 38-24. Archambeault made 20 saves, and Jessie-Gerelli made 38 and would pick up the shutout win.
