Three Seahawks Combine for Six Points, Seahawks Down the Golden Bears, 3-1

Springfield, Mass. (November 19, 2023) - The Golden Bears returned to West Springfield for their second matchup with the Salve Regina University Seahawks. After not giving up a goal in the first period, the Golden Bears let up three in the second. They would get one back in the third but would lose 3-1.

How it Happened:

Period number one started with Andrew LoRusso and Selby Warren in net for the Golden Bears and Seahawks, respectively. Matt Dougherty won the opening faceoff, and the game was underway. Shots went back and forth for the first half of the first period. Both teams were getting shots off, but the Seahawks were getting a few more here and there. The majority of the major opportunities were falling toward the Seahawks. However, WNE went on the power play with 6:07 left in the first period. The Golden Bears had four shots during the power play, but all four of them got blocked. After the power play, the Golden Bears kept the puck in the Seahawks' defensive zone and put three shots on Warren, who made each save. The Golden Bears were called for a penalty with three minutes left in the first period. The Golden Bears would get a shorthanded shot on goal to start the Seahawks' penalty. The Seahawks then had six shots with five on LoRusso. LoRusso made each save. With a few seconds left on that penalty, the Golden Bears were called for a second penalty. The Seahawks finished the first period with four shots on the second power play and went into the locker room with time left on that power play. After the power plays, the stats in terms of shots turned toward Salve Regina University. The Seahawks had 31 shots with 16 on goal. The Golden Bears had 19 shots with 11 on goal. The Seahawks won 14 faceoffs to the Golden Bears' 9. The score was 0-0 after the first period.

The second period started with a Matthew Fawcett opening faceoff win. The Seahawks then had three shots to end the power play, with one being on LoRusso, which was saved. The Seahawks ramped up the pressure and got shot after shot off on the Golden Bears. They retained most of the possession and kept going for goal. The Seahawks went on a 20-5 run for shots. That led up to the 10:07 mark, where Matthew Fawcett slotted the puck into the back of the net for the opening goal. Johnny Mulera found Fawcett in front of the net for the goal. The Seahawks led 1-0. The Seahawks kept up the pressure with six of the next seven shots. The Golden Bears tried to answer with some pressure. They had four of the next five shots. However, the momentum stayed with the Seahawks, and with 1:10 left in the second period, the Seahawks struck again. Garrett Szeremley sent the puck to Fawcett, who found Mulera in front of the net for the second goal. The Seahawks led 2-0. Twenty-two seconds later, the Seahawks made it 3-0 when Logan Calder won the faceoff, and the puck went back to Ian Tookenay, who quickly moved it to Szeremley, who sent a wrist shot into the back of the net for the goal. The Seahawks led 3-0 at the second intermission. The Seahawks led 37-13 in shots and 20-8 in shots on goal. They also led 12-10 in faceoffs won.

The third period started with Damon Zimmer winning the opening faceoff for the Seahawks. The Seahawks opened the period with 12 straight shots before the Golden Bears could get a shot. Then, the Golden Bears would get five of the next eight shots before a penalty was called on the Seahawks, and the Golden Bears were on the power play. The Golden Bears had two shots, one on Warren before another penalty was called on the Seahawks. The Golden Bears had one shot on Warren before the first power play ended. Then, after a won faceoff in the Seahawks' zone, Matt Dougherty sent a pass over to Sam Mitchell. Mitchell found Shane Miller, who skated to the left and sent a wrist shot at the top right corner of the goal, and it made it to the back of the net for the power play goal. The Golden Bears cut the Seahawks' lead to 3-1. The Golden Bears had two shots after that go wide before being called for a penalty. The Seahawks had two shots during the power play before the Golden Bears had a shorthanded shot. There were two penalties then called, with one on each team. The Seahawks had a shot saved by LoRusso before being called for another penalty. The Golden Bears had five shots on the power play but no goals. The Seahawks finished the game with two shots. The game ended with the Seahawks getting the win. The stat sheet showed the Seahawks with 90 shots to the Golden Bears' 48. The Seahawks had 48 shots on goal, and the Golden Bears had 26. WNE had six penalties, and Salve Regina University had five. The Seahawks also won 40 faceoffs to the Golden Bears' 29. The final score was 3-1 Seahawks.

Inside the Crease:

  • The Golden Bears hosted the Seahawks for the second game of their home-and-home series with Salve Regina University.
  • Matthew Fawcett scored the first goal for the Seahawks with 9:53 left in the second period to give the Seahawks a 1-0 lead. Johnny Mulera had the assist.
  • Johnny Mulera scored the second goal for the Seahawks with 1:10 left in the second period. Mulera was assisted by Garrett Szeremley and Matthew Fawcett to give the Seahawks the 2-0 lead.
  • Garrett Szeremley had the third goal of the second period for the Seahawks. Logan Calder and Ian Tookenay were credited with the assists. The Seahawks led 3-0.
  • Shane Miller got a goal back for the Golden Bears off assists from Sam Mitchell and Matt Dougherty at the 12:24 mark in the third period. The score was 3-1, Seahawks.
  • Selby Warren ended with 26 saves.
  • Andrew LoRusso ended with 44 saves.
  • The Golden Bears lost 3-1 to the Seahawks.
