Late Surge Not Enough as Golden Bears Fall to Rams 4-3

Boston, Mass. (December 1, 2023) - The Golden Bears traveled to Boston for a showdown with the Suffolk University Rams. Both teams were coming off losses and looking to rebound with a win. Suffolk got on the board first with a goal in the first period. The Rams got two more before the Golden Bears got two to make the score 3-2. Then, each team would get one more goal, and the game would end 4-3, with the Rams winning.

How it Happened:

The game began with Andrew LoRusso and Chris Jackson in net for the Golden Bears and Rams, respectively. Nolan Dawson won the opening faceoff, and the game was underway. Suffolk had the first shot on net, which LoRusso saved. However, WNE was getting more shots in the beginning. Suffolk would start to find their rhythm and get more shots on net. LoRusso made the saves. Shane Miller then had the first shot on goal against the Rams. Jackson made the save. That led to more shots on goal from the Golden Bears. Jackson made each save. After a faceoff win by the Rams' Gavin Havens in the Golden Bears defensive zone, Devin Lowe got the puck and sent it to Scott McManus, who put the puck into the back of the net. That gave the Rams a 1-0 lead. Suffolk did not stop the pressure as they kept sending shots at the net. WNE tried to counter, but the shots were getting blocked by the Suffolk defense. After back-and-forth action, the Golden Bears went on the power play with 1:06 left in the first period. Suffolk got a short-handed shot off to start the WNE power play, but LoRusso made the save. WNE then had a shot saved by Jackson and another shot blocked by the Suffolk defense before the end of the period. At the end of one period of play, the score was 1-0 Suffolk, with the Rams leading in shots on net by a score of 19-8, the Golden Bears leading in saves 18-8, faceoffs 14-8, and power plays 1-0. 

Ryan Webb won the opening faceoff for the second period of play for the Rams. Eighteen seconds into the second period, the Golden Bears were called for a penalty, and the teams skated 4-on-4 for 36 seconds before Suffolk went on the power play. The Rams had two shots during the power play, with both shots saved by LoRusso. However, the Rams kept the pressure on, and at 4:07 into the second period, the Rams netted their second goal. Olle Akermark found Jack Kircher, who sent a shot at net that Jack Webb deflected into the back of the net. The Rams led 2-0. Just over a minute and a half later, the Rams made their lead three. Nick Liotino scored a wrist shot that Josh Milso and Tyler Borys assisted. The score was 3-0 Rams. Then, after the Golden Bears got some momentum back. Brayden Patricia intercepted a pass from the Rams in the Suffolk defensive zone and snuck a shot past the goalie to cut the Rams' lead back to two with 9:56 left in the second period of play. The score was 3-1 Rams. The Golden Bears would keep the pressure up and earn a power play with 6:33 left in the second period. The Golden Bears had seven shots during the power play, with four on goal. Jackson made each save. Then, with 3:45 left in the second period, both teams would pick up a minor penalty and skate 4-on-4 for two minutes. The Golden Bears had a shot saved by Jackson. Suffolk had three shots, with one saved by LoRusso. With nine seconds left in the second period, the Golden Bears would return to the power play and start the final period of play on the power play. After two periods of play, the Golden Bears trailed the Rams by a score of 3-1. The shots on goal after two periods of play favored the Rams 14-9, and saves favored the Golden Bears 12-8.

Gavin Havens won the opening faceoff for the final period of play. However, the Golden Bears were on the power play. The Golden Bears had two shots during the power play, both saved by Jackson. The puck would go back and forth between the teams before the Rams would have a breakaway. LoRusso stayed calm and made the big save to keep the score at 3-1. 6:52 into the final period of play, the Golden Bears cut the Suffolk lead down to one. Everest Schneider outskated the Rams' defense for a loose puck, skated in, and scored. The score was 3-2 Rams with 13:08 left in the game. With almost ten minutes left in the game, the Rams would go on the power play. They took three shots on goal, which included a goal by Jake Grace. Gavin Havens and Scott McManus were credited with the assists. The score was 4-2 Rams with 8:07 left. The Rams went back on the power play with 7:46 left in the game. The Rams had six shots on goal during the power play. Each shot was saved by LoRusso. The Golden Bears would also get a shot on goal during the Suffolk power play, but Jackson made the save. Rais Francis would give the Golden Bears some momentum at the end of the game with a goal assisted by Finn Bambery and Brayden Patricia. It was 4-3 with 4:37 left in the game. The Golden Bears picked up a power play with 1:42 left in the game. WNE had six shots with three shots on net. Jackson made each save, and the Rams would hold on for the 4-3 victory. The Rams outshot the Golden Bears 48-29.

  • Scott McManus scored the first goal of the game for the Rams with 9:40 remaining in the opening period of play. Devin Lowe and Gavin Havens assisted on the play. Suffolk led 1-0.
  • Jack Webb scored the second goal for the Rams 4:07 into the second period of play. Jack Kircher and Olle Akermark had the assists. The score was 2-0 Rams.
  • Nick Liotino scored the Rams' third goal 5:40 into the second period. Josh Milso and Tyler Borys assisted the goal. The Rams had a 3-0 lead.
  • Brayden Patricia netted the Golden Bears' first goal of the game with 9:56 left in the second period of play. The goal was unassisted. It was 3-1 Rams.
  • Everest Schneider scored the second goal for the Golden Bears with 13:08 left in the game. There was no assist on the goal. The score was 3-2 Rams.
  • Jake Grace scored the fourth and game-winning goal for the Rams with 8:07 left in the game. Gavin Havens and Scott McManus had the assists for the goal. The score was 4-2 Rams. 
  • Rais Francis scored for the Golden Bears with 4:37 left in the game to make the score 4-3. Finn Bambery and Brayden Patricia had the assists on the goal.
  • LoRusso finished the game with 44 saves.
  • Jackson finished the game with 26 saves.
  • The Rams beat the Golden Bears 4-3.

Up Next on the Schedule:

  • The teams will travel to West Springfield and the Olympia Ice Center for their second game in as many nights against each other. The game will be played at 7:00 PM on Saturday, December 2, 2023.
