Men’s Wrestling Thumps Hunter, Takes Dual Victory over New Jersey City at NYU Duals

NEW YORK, N.Y. (December 2, 2023) – The Western New England men's wrestling team put together two wins in three matches on Saturday afternoon at the New York University duals, dropping a close match to 14th-ranked NYU while defeating New Jersey City University and Hunter College to finish 2-1 on the afternoon. Jaylen Hawkins, Sean Monteiro, CJ Glaropoulos, and Griffin Ostrom highlighted WNE's afternoon, going undefeated on the day.

How it Happened (vs. No. 14 NYU):
The Golden Bears would grab three victories over the 14th-ranked Violets as Clayton O'Connor would take the 125 lb. match on a decision, 11-5, while Griffin Ostrom took the forfeit victory in the 197 lb. match. Jaylen Hawkins would start off his afternoon with a decision victory, coming away with one of three victories on the night. This victory came over NYU's Trent Furman, who was a 2022 NCAA qualifier and is currently ranked fourth in the 184 lb. weight class. Hawkins would take the win 9-6, while Western New England would be defeated 34-12 in their opening match of the day.

How it Happened (vs. New Jersey City):
Western New England would grab six victories over New Jersey City to take the match 32-16. Austin Monteiro would collect his first win of the afternoon, grabbing a tech-fall victory in the 141 lb. weight class, 18-3. Sean Monteiro would collect one of his two wins on the day in the 165 lb. weight class, taking a big 13-9 decision victory to earn three points for Western New England's team score. Coming off a huge victory in last night's win over Rhode Island College, CJ Glaropoulos would grab a pinfall victory in 2:42 to add to WNE's lead. Jaylen Hawkins would continue his dominance on the mat for WNE, also taking a pinfall victory in 2:01. Griffin Ostrom and Tyreece Cherival would collect forfeit wins as Western New England would go on to defeat NJC 32-16.

How it Happened (vs. Hunter College)
WNE men's wrestling had no problem taking down Hunter, taking all ten weight class matches. The final dual of the afternoon would be highlighted by Jaylen Hawkins, who earned his third win of the afternoon, taking a pinfall victory to move to 3-0 in the 184 lb. weight class on the day. Sean Monteiro wrapped up his second win of the day to finish with two wins for the Golden Bears. Griffin Ostrom would take the 285 lb. weight class to also finish 3-0 on the day. Western New England would earn eight pinfall victories in the dual match, while Colby Reilly would take a major decision win in the 133 lb. weight class as Western New England would wrap up their afternoon with a strong 58-0 victory over Hunter College to finish 2-1 on the day.
