FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 14, 2023) – The Western New England field hockey team used a three goal fourth quarter to get past the hosting Falcons of Fitchburg State University in a rescheduled Thursday afternoon game.

How it Happened:
No goals were had in the opening 15 minutes, though the Golden Bears controlled much of the action on the offensive end. WNE took the shots advantage 4-1 in the opening quarter with Fitchburg's Jenna Morse making three saves to start the game. WNE starting goalkeeper
Ella Henry was not forced to make a save as the Falcons took one shot the trickled wide of the net. Western New England would score the first goal of the game in the second quarter when
Kara Edwards found the back of the net with six minutes remaining to give WNE a 1-0 lead. WNE took the 4-2 edge in shots in the second quarter, taking the one goal lead into the break.
Ella Henry made one save in the second.
Neither team found the back of the net in the third quarter, though again, Western New England would dominate much of the offensive attack in the quarter. The Golden Bears were awarded four penalty corners while taking five shots towards goal, putting four shots on goal. Jenna Morse stood tall for FSU, allowing just one goal on nine saves through the first 45 minutes of play.
The Golden Bears broke through Morse and the Falcons in the fourth quarter to expand their lead.
Haley Kaczka opened the scoring for the Golden Bears in the fourth quarter after
Olyvia Whyte inserted a penalty corner that went to the stick of
Carly-Anna Barba.
Barba would send a pass to
Kaczka who slotted home her second goal of the season to give WNE the 2-0 lead. Just over three minutes later, Western New England would find the back of the goal on a rebound after
Sarah Johnston's shot would be saved, though
Olivia Eastman would clean up the rebound, slotting the ball into the back of the net, giving WNE a quick 3-0 lead after just one goal was scored in the opening 45 minutes. The Golden Bears grabbed a fourth goal to quickly put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter when
Taya Buntin netted a goal with just over five minutes remaining in the contest to give WNE a 4-0 lead. Fitchburg State would be awarded three penalty corners in succession and found the back of the net less than a minute after the goal for WNE to get their first goal of the season. Western New England would not be able to extend their lead, though would finish the game with the offensive momentum, taking the 4-1 win from the Falcons.
