Springfield, Mass. (September 16, 2023) - The Golden Bears returned to Suprenant Field after their draw with Mount Holyoke College on Wednesday night. They hosted their first conference game of the year against Curry. The Golden Bears struck first in the first half. However, Curry was able to equalize at the beginning of the second half. The Golden Bears would retake the lead less than three minutes later and would go on to win 2-1.

How it Happened:
The Golden Bears hosted the Colonels in their first conference game of the year. The game started with Molly McLaughlin and Lexi Smardon in net for the Golden Bears and Colonels, respectively. The first shot of the day would come from Julia Frappier in the 6th minute. Smardon was able to make the save. In the 14th minute, Liza Pinette would send a shot at the net that a Curry defender saved. The ball would rebound back to Julia Frappier, who sent a shot back at the goal, and it would get past the defense for a WNE goal. The score was 1-0, with the Golden Bears in the lead. Curry would battle back after the goal with a shot by Madison Frye that would go wide. That was followed by three blocked shots for the Golden Bears. Pinette, Lindsay Reidy, and Isabella Montalvo all sent shots toward Smardon, but each shot was blocked by the Curry defense. In the 28th minute, Curry's Sydney Resendes sent a shot on goal, but McLaughlin was there for the save. That was quickly followed up by an Alison Goodreau shot that Smardon made the save on. In the 35th minute, Mia Schena sent a shot at McLaughlin that was saved. Emma French would get a shot off next, but it was blocked before getting to Smardon. Reidy would get a shot to Smardon in the 39th minute. Smardon was able to save it and keep the deficit at one. The last five minutes saw three shots on net. Brynn Murphy sent a shot at the goal, but Smardon made the save. Then, Reidy sent another shot toward Smardon, who was able to make another save. The final shot of the half came from Resendes. However, McLaughlin made the save, and the Golden Bears entered the break with a 1-0 lead. The first half saw the Golden Bears outshoot the Colonels 11-4, with shots on net being in the Golden Bears' favor, as well, 7-3. WNE had more corners by a tally of 3-1 and had eight fouls compared to the three from Curry.
After the 15-minute halftime, play got underway quickly. Madison Frye had a corner kick in the 47th minute, and the ball would find its way to Catia Fernandes, who sent the ball toward the back of the net and in. That put the Colonels back level with the Golden Bears at 1-1. It did not take long for the Golden Bears to respond. In the 50th minute, Emma French sent the ball into Pinette, who put the ball into the back of the goal to give the Golden Bears the lead back, 2-1. After that, the Golden Bears and Colonels battled back and forth, and after some time, the Colonels got two shots off. Shannon Folan sent the first one wide right of the net. Resendes sent the second shot wide right, as well. The Golden Bears then had two shots to match.
Murphy sent a shot wide right, and Frappier sent a shot high. Frye tried to equalize the game for the Colonels in the 67th minute, but McLaughlin saved the shot and kept the score the same. Reidy followed that with a shot that sailed over the crossbar and out of play. Gabriella Stocker went for a goal in the 72nd minute for the Colonels, but the shot also went high of the crossbar. The 78th minute saw a Kyleigh Wheaton shot go wide. NC Juarez had a shot go high of the net in the 86th minute, and then Murphy would send a shot to the right of the net in the 90th minute. That would be how the game would end. The Golden Bears won 2-1. The final stats showed the Golden Bears lead in shots (17-10), shots on goal (8-5), and fouls (17-11). The Colonels had more corners (5-4) and saves (6-4). The Golden Bears picked up their first conference win of the season and stayed unbeaten for the fifth game in a row.
