Golden Bears Women’s Volleyball Handles Eastern Connecticut, 3-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 19, 2023) – The Western New England women's volleyball team took down the visiting Warriors from Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday evening at the Alumni Healthful Living Center, defeating the Warriors by a final score of 3-0.

How it Happened:
The Golden Bears got off to a quick 3-0 start in the first set and never looked back, as the blue and gold would never trail in the opening set. Elizabeth Long would collect two kills in the opening three points to get the ball rolling early. The Golden Bears would see their lead extend to five when Ella Soutter finished a kill to take a 7-2 lead. WNE's Isabelle Petty would finish off the 10th point of the first set as Western New England would continue to roll. Eastern Connecticut would make the match interesting, ripping off five straight points to get within one point, seeing the score jump from 12-6 to 12-11. WNE would respond, winning the next eight of 12 points to take a 20-15 lead. Alissa Hawes would grab a kill and a block during the string. Western New England would finish off the set with a kill from Elizabeth Long on an assist from Taylor Geist, taking the opening set 25-20.

Eastern Connecticut jumped out to an early 9-3 lead in the second set, rolling early. The Warriors would eventually take a 15-7 lead, but Western New England would have an answer, winning 18 of the next 26 points to take the second set 25-23. A 7-0 run for Western New England would see the Golden Bears deficit move from seven points to one after Becca Mayer would serve six straight points for WNE. WNE would even the score on a service ace at 22-22 from Zoe Bozzay and would wrap up the set on two straight kills from Alissa Hawes, taking the second set 25-23.

An early start in the third set for the Golden Bears would see the blue and gold get out to another 3-0 lead and again would not look back, never trailing in the third set, putting the match out of reach for the Warriors. Ella Soutter and Isabelle Petty would grab kills, which put Western New England ahead 10-4. Eastern strung together more than one point just twice in the third set, while Alissa Hawes and Taylor Geist would put the match away for WNE. The final four points of the night would go the Golden Bears way after four errors from the Warriors, who would win the match for Western New England, winning set three 25-14 and the match 3-0.

Inside the Lines:
  • WNE sent down 34 kills in the match, while ECSU collected just 18. WNE was led by Alissa Hawes, who collected 13 kills in the win.
  • Isabelle Petty collected two blocks and ten kills in the match.
  • Taylor Geist put up 29 assists for the Golden Bears in the three-set victory.
  • ECSU collected six blocks in the match and was led by Taylor Thopmson, who collected five kills.
  • WNE ends a four-game losing streak to the Warriors and defeats Eastern for the first time since 2017.
