BOSTON, Mass. (September 23, 2023) – The Western New England men's soccer team found their winning ways for the first time of the season on Saturday afternoon, taking down the Leopards of Wentworth Institute of Technology by a final score of 2-0.
Records:
- Western New England: 1-3-4, 1-0-1 CCC
- Wentworth Institute: 2-6, 0-2 CCC
How it Happened:
Short on offense this season, Western New England found the back of the net in the 11
th minute to get the scoring started after the first ten minutes of the contest were taken over by the Golden Bears. The Golden Bears would capitalize on a misplay by Wentworth when a mis-clearance by the Wentworth defense would see
Matt Spruill in with a chance at goal and tuck the ball into the lower left corner of the net, giving the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Bears would take over the first 45 minutes of the game as WNE would outshoot the Leopards on their home field 9-2. Louis Quintero would make four first-half saves for Wentworth to keep the Leopards in the contest. The blue and gold would take four corner kicks in the half, while Wentworth was awarded one.
The Golden Bears would see the better of the chances in the second half after Jake Leland would take a shot in the opening minutes of the half, though Wentworth new goalkeeper Noah Lawless would be up to the task. The Leopards would not take their first shot on goal until the 76
th minute, when Kyle Hallahan took a shot that was saved by
Braylon Casinghino to keep Wentworth at bay. Western New England would see Wentworth pressure in the final minutes of the game, looking for the equalizer. WIT's Alex Burnham would take a shot that would be saved by
Casinghino, and the Golden Bears would go in on the attack with a full force of defenders on the opposite end for Wentworth.
Dom Bugnacki would set up
Brennan Johnson for his first goal of the season with just four seconds remaining, as Western New England would take a 2-0 lead and victory from the hosting Leopards to win their first game of the season.
