Late Goals Lifts Western New England Past Wentworth in CCC Play

BOSTON, Mass. (September 23, 2023)- The Western New England women's soccer team needed a goal in the final six minutes of the contest to get past the Leopards of Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon, getting an own goal to take the victory.

Records:
  • Western New England: 4-1-2, 2-0 CCC
  • Wentworth Institute: 1-5, 0-2 CCC
How it Happened:
In an offense game dominated by the Golden Bears, Wentworth's Claire Reif would stand tall in between the pipes for the Leopards. WNE would test the Leopards defense early as Jordan Pare, Liza Pinette, Emma French, Ashley Collins, and Isabella Montalvo would all take attempts at goal in the opening 25 minutes of the game, though no goals would be scored. Keara Conroy and Liza Pinette would finish the half with shots on goal that would both be denied by the Wentworth goalkeeper as the two teams stayed even after one half of play. Molly McLaughlin was forced to make two saves in the opening 45 minutes of play.

McLaughlin would make the first save of the second half, as Wentworth would get their best scoring chance of the afternoon. Western New England would control much of the offensive play from there, though the Golden Bears would be turned aside by Claire Reif. Western New England would grab a corner kick with under six minutes remaining in the contest, still tied at zero, and would take full advantage of the final corner kick of the game. Julia Frappier would take the corner kick that would sail in the air and would be headed down by a Wentworth defender and into the back of the net as Western New England would take the 1-0 lead. Isabella Montalvo would take the final two shots of the game, as Wentworth would have no answer to the goal as the Golden Bears would escape with a 1-0 win over the Leopards to take their second CCC win of the season.

Inside the Lines:
  • Western New England out shot the Leopards 21-9 in the game and 13-4 in shots on goal. Wentworth goalkeeper Claire Reif would make 12 saves in the game.
  • Molly McLaughlin registered her third clean sheet of the season, making all four saves in the 90 minutes.
  • Western New England's lone goal would come on an own goal from the Leopards on a header off a corner kick.
  • The Golden Bears have now won four straight over the Leopards and improved to 11-7-1 all-time.
