Union’s Wyatt Goldfisher Nets Two, Helps Dutchmen Take Down Golden Bears 3-1

Schenectady, N.Y. (September 6, 2023) - The Men's Soccer Team traveled out west to Union College for a midweek non-conference matchup. The Golden Bears started the year with two draws and were looking to grab their first win of the young season. Union started the season with a loss at home against #15 SUNY Oneonta and was also looking for that first win. The game started with goals from both sides, but then Union would net two more before the end of the first half, and it would stay that way for the rest of the game as the final score was 3-1 Union.

Records:

  • Western New England: 0-1-2 (0-0-0)
  • Union College: 1-1-0 (0-0-0)

How it Happened:

Braylon Casinghino started the game as the WNE goalkeeper. Across the pitch was Union's starting goalkeeper, Paul Agne. The whistle started the game at 6:00 p.m. Both teams moved the ball from side to side on the pitch and tried to find openings in the opponent's defense. Union was the first to strike in the 8th minute. Noah Goldstein sent a pass to Evan Farr, who, in turn, crossed the ball to Marco Perugini, who was able to glance the ball into the back of the net. WNE tried to pressure Union after the goal, and it led to two a couple of corners for WNE. In the 17th minute, Union's Luke Ingber sent a shot at Casinghino. Casinghino made the save to keep the deficit at one. In the 21st minute, Mike Riley stepped up to take a free kick outside the Union penalty box.

Riley made the run-up, sent a hard shot to the right of the goalkeeper, and just threaded past the keeper to even the game up at 1 goal per side. After WNE tied it up, Union and WNE went back and forth with the ball. Both teams had shots, but neither team could get a shot on goal at first. In the 28th minute, Jayden Montagna sent a shot at the lower left corner of the goal, but Agne made the save. The 34th minute showed Aiden Normand get a shot off, but Casinghino did not have to worry much about it. Later that minute, Lucas Crowley crossed the ball to Wyatt Goldfisher, who sent a hard shot toward the bottom-right corner, hitting the back of the net. It was 2-1 Union. The 39th minute saw Union given a free kick on the left side of the field.

Luca Richo took the free kick, and Goldfisher got a head on the ball and directed it into the back of the net to give Union a 3-1 lead. Union had another shot after that, but WNE would follow it up in the 45th minute. Carlson Rose sent a shot right at Agne in the lower center portion of the net. Agne made the save, and soon after, the half was over. Union outshot WNE 7-4 in the first half. They had six corners to WNE's two. WNE had five fouls called against them, and Union had three. The score was 3-1 after the end of the first half, with Union in the lead.

After the break, both teams tried to make moves, but the defenses were standing strong. WNE would make some runs and even draw a few corners. However, Union stood strong and would not let the lead fall apart. The first shot finally came in the 68th minute. Diego Pascual-Sanchiz got a shot off, but it missed to the right of Casinghino in goal. Luke Ingber followed that in the 68th minute with a shot to the left of the goal. After some more back-and-forth action, Jake Thibodeau put a shot on net. The ball rolled to the bottom right corner of the goal, but Agne made the save. The teams kept battling, and ten minutes later, Sam Riley missed high of the net. Finally, Sean Lanzillohad a shot with six seconds left in the game, but Paul Agne made the save in the middle of the net. That would seal the game for Union and help them capture their first win of the season, 3-1. The final stats showed Union with 11 shots and WNE with seven. WNE did have more shots on goal than Union (5-4). WNE had more fouls than Union (9-8) and more corners (9-7). It was a tough game, but WNE dropped their first of the year 3-1.
