WNE Field Hockey Continues Winning Streak, Takes Down Western Connecticut 6-0

DANBURY, Conn. (September 6, 2023) – The Western New England field hockey team took to the rode for their second straight game on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Wolves of Western Connecticut State University by a final score of 6-0, running their win streak to three games, opening the season at 3-0 for the first time since 2015.

How it Happened:
The Golden Bears came out hot in the first quarter, opening the game with the first goal in just 5:31 to get an early 1-0 lead. Sarah Johnston found Kara Edwards, who potted her first career collegiate goal to give the blue and gold the opening goal of the game for the third straight game to open the season. Western Connecticut would fight back and find their offensive game, though sophomore goalkeeper Ella Henry was up to the task, making three saves in the opening 15 minutes to keep the Wolves at bey. WNE outshot Western Connecticut 4-3 in the opening frame. 

The Golden Bears would dominate the offensive side of the ball in the second quarter, not allowing the Wolves towards goal. WNE would score their second goal of the game with five minutes remaining in the quarter when Olyvia Whyte found the back of the net to give WNE a 2-0 lead. Just 1:05 later, Western New England's Haley Kaczka would tally her first goal of the season on a penalty stroke, beating Wolves keeper Kayla Hnasko and giving the Golden Bears a 3-0 lead. WNE would add one final goal at the end of the frame when Taya Buntin found the back of the net for the first time in her Golden Bears career on an assist from Claire Cronin, giving WNE a 4-0 lead after two quarters of play. WNE outshot the Wolves 9-1 in the quarter. 

Two goals in the third quarter would be all the Golden Bears would need to take down Western Connecticut. Sarah Johnston would find twine twice for WNE within a 1:19 span in the third quarter as WNE climbed all over the Wolves after three quarters, leading 6-0. The WNE defense did not allow a Western Connecticut shot in the frame. 

The final quarter would see just two shots on goal by the Golden Bears while the Wolves would put one shot wide of the keeper as Western New England would take a 6-0 win over Western Connecticut. 

Inside the Lines:
  • WNE outshot the Wolves 24-5 in the contest and 19-4 with shots on goal in the game.
  • Kara Edwards, Haley Kaczka, and Taya Buntin would score their first goals of the season. 
  • Sarah Johnston tallied twice for the Golden Bears, marking four goals on the season. 
  • WNE earned four penalty corners in the contest while the Wolves grabbed three, all in the first quarter. 
  • WNE is 2-0 all-time against the Wolves and is 3-0 for the first time since 2015.
