Women’s Volleyball Tripped Up in Four Sets to Lasell in Opening Night at Bonnie May Invitational

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (September 8, 2023) – The Western New England women's volleyball team fell on day one of the Bonnie May Invitational on Friday night, losing at the hands of Lasell University, who took down the Golden Bears in four sets, winning the match 3-1.

How it Happened:
The Golden Bears opened the first set with a quick 2-0 lead on two service aces from Hailey Sell. Lasell and WNE would split points before the Lasers would go on a 4-0 run to take a 13-8 lead. Ella Soutter would grab a kill on an assist from Taylor Geist to stop the Lasers run. WNE would attempt to get back in the contest, seeing an error from the Lasers get WNE within two points of a tie. The Golden Bears watched Lasell put up a mini 3-0 run to take a 22-17 lead and ended the set with the final two points to take the opening set 25-20. 

The Golden Bears found their game in the second set, opening with an Elizabeth Long kill to get WNE ahead early. The Golden Bears and Lasers would go back and forth through the opening 21 points of the set where the score would be deadlocked at 11 all. WNE Would take it from there, grabbing three quick point, started by a kill from Isabelle Petty as the Golden Bears took a 14-11 lead. Western New England would grab four straight points after the Lasers brought the match to within one point when Hailey Sell, Alissa Hawes, and Ella Soutter helped the Golden Bears take a five-point lead. Isabelle Petty would throw down the final two points of the set for WNE as the Golden Bears took a 25-19 victory in set two.

The Lasers took control of the third set early and never looked back, leading by as many as 11 points in total. Just five of WNE's 16 points would come on kills in the set as Lasell took the third set by a final score of 25-16. 

The Golden Bears would mount a huge lead in the fourth set, trying to force a deciding set. Elizabeth Long, Isabelle Petty, and Leah Warren would strike early for WNE while a 6-0 run for the Golden Bears quickly put them ahead 11-3 in the set. Lasell would march right back with runs of their own, seeing WNE's eight-point lead evaporate down the stretch. At 22-19 in favor of WNE, Lasell would grab the next seven points, taking the set to match point at 24-22 before WNE would rip off the next two points to even the score. Lasell would finish off the set and the match with two kills from Tori Scambrady to win the set 26-24 and win the match for Lasell 3-1. 

Inside the Box:
  • As a team, WNE hit .153 from the floor and collected 43 kills. Lasell hit .230 as a team and notched 49 kills on the night. 
  • Isabelle Petty led WNE with 14 kills in the four-set match with Alissa Hawes (9), and Ella Soutter (8) lending a hand. 
  • Hailey Sell collected 16 assists in the match, leading all Golden Bears.
