PROVIDENCE, R.I. (January 21, 2024) – The Western New England men's wrestling team competed in the New England Wrestling Association Duals (NEWA) on Sunday afternoon, taking sixth place overall out of 16 teams competing. WNE would go 2-2 on the afternoon as a team.
How It Happened (vs. Norwich University):
The Golden Bears came away with wins in seven of the ten weight classes to take down the Cadets of Norwich University.
Colby Reilly opened the wins for WNE with a 10-3 decision victory over Carver Moyer.
Austin Monteiro earned a massive 18-5 victory in the 141 lb. weight class, while
Peter Charnley grabbed a 19-4 tech-fall victory for Western New England at 149. The bout at 157 saw WNE's
Cameron Hines earn a pinfall victory in 2:15, taking the match 7-0 and earning six points for the Golden Bears. Western New England would continue to earn wins, with
Sean Monteiro picking up a major decision victory, 15-4 in the 165 lb. weight class, while
CJ Glaropoulos won WNE's sixth straight match to take a pinfall victory in 2:36 in the 174 lb. weight class.
Griffin Ostrom would win the 197 lb. weight class for the Golden Bears to ice the match for the Golden Bears, earning a major decision victory for the Golden Bears, 13-1. Western New England would take a 32-12 victory over the Cadets to move into the quarterfinal round.
How It Happened (vs. Springfield College):
Western New England would take on cross-town rival Springfield College in the quarterfinal round in an attempt to move into the semifinal round. The Golden Bears would drop the match in what was one of the closest matches in the NEWA Duals, falling 24-21. After Springfield College took the first two matches of the afternoon, WNE would see
Austin Monteiro come away with a 3-2 decision win at 141 to earn WNE's first win over the Pride. Western New England would also take the 157 lb., 165 lb., and 174 lb. weight classes in a row, as the Golden Bears would even the match at 15 all. SC would win at 184 before WNE would win at 197 when
Aidan DeLuca took a pinfall victory. Springfield College won the heavyweight battle, as the Golden Bears would fall short 24-21 in the match.
How it Happened: vs. Trinity (Conn.) University
Austin Monteiro continued his excellent wrestling in the 141 lb. weight class, taking his third win of the afternoon in a match with Trinity (Conn.) University. Trinity would take the first three of four matches before the Golden Bears stormed back to take four of the final five when
Cameron Hines,
Nicholas Baccala,
Charles Maloy, and
Griffin Ostrom all tallied victories for the Golden Bears.
Hines came away with a pinfall victory,
Baccala a 10-6 decision win,
Maloy a 9-4 decision win, and
Ostrom a pinfall victory to lead Western New England to a close 21-18 victory over the Bantmas to advance to the 5
th/6
th place match.
How It Happened (vs. Roger Williams University)
The Hawks would claim victory in the match to take fifth place overall in the duals, while WNE would grab sixth place.
Colby Reilly would earn a fall victory in the 133 lb. weight class, while
Peter Charnley finished with a 4-0 pinfall victory in 1:49, though the Golden Bears would see the Hawks come away with five victories in the final five weight classes of the afternoon to fall in the match by a final score of 34-12.
Johnson & Wales University claimed victory in the duals overall.
