Seven Weight Classes Goes WNE’s Way In First Annual Bear Cup Victory

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (November 16, 2024)  - The Western New England men's wrestling team competed in their second straight dual match of the weekend, earning their second win with a 31-12 victory over the Bears of Bridgewater State University, claiming the trophy for the first annual Bear Cup.

How It Happened:
The Golden Bears started off strong, winning the first five matches of the competition and taking an early lead. James Linder began the streak in the 149 lb. weight class, defeating Bridgewater's James Calabrese with a technical fall decision, 17-2 in 4:57, to secure the first five points of the afternoon and give WNE a 5-0 lead. Colin Carlin followed with a pinfall victory in the shortest match of the day, winning in just 1:31 in the 157 lb. weight class. Carlin's performance added six more points to the Golden Bears' lead, increasing it to 11-0. Tristan Julian, wrestling up a weight class for the first time this season, claimed his sixth win of the season in the 165 lb. weight class with a major decision victory, 15-5, over BSU. CJ Glaropoulos earned the closest win of the afternoon with a 6-5 decision in the 174 lb. weight class, contributing three more points for the Golden Bears. Western New England extended their dominance with a victory in the 184 lb. weight class when David Lisk secured a pinfall win in 3:42, earning six points and giving the Golden Bears a commanding 24-0 lead after the first five matches. Nemo Pettway added to WNE's score by defeating Bridgewater's Albert Ortiz with a 3-1 decision in the heavyweight class, earning three more points. The Golden Bears' final win of the afternoon came in the 133 lb. weight class, where Antonio Intintoli defeated BSU's Christopher Dubey with a major decision, 10-0, earning the final four points for Western New England. This sealed a 31-12 victory and secured the first-ever Bear Cup for WNE.
In exhibition contests, the Golden Bears triumphed in 10 out of 11 matches. Beniamino Dicocco and Austin Mitrosky led the way, each earning two victories for Western New England.
