SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 2, 2024) – The Western New England field hockey team suffered a narrow 2-1 loss on Saturday afternoon at Golden Bear Stadium against the visiting Gulls of Endicott College. With this defeat, WNE will enter the CNE semifinals as the third seed later this week. Prior to the game, the Golden Bears honored their Class of 2024 seniors.

How It Happened:
Western New England had the advantage in offensive chances during the opening quarter, with
Amanda Burns taking the first shot on goal, which was saved by the Endicott defense. Maddy Young collected a defensive save to keep WNE off the scoreboard. The Golden Bears earned two early penalty corners but failed to convert.
Sarah Johnston had a shot blocked by the Endicott defense, maintaining the scoreless tie. Endicott nearly scored with ten minutes remaining in the quarter when Kathleen Reissfelder hit the post.
Zoey Wexler recorded one save in the opening 15 minutes.
The Golden Bears continued to press in the second quarter as
Olyvia Whyte took two quick shots on goal, both denied by Endicott's Faith Minickene. Following these saves, Western New England earned a penalty corner that led to the game's first goal.
Sarah Johnston inserted the corner, finding the stick of
Haley Kaczka. Kaczka settled the ball and fired a shot that was tipped by Johnston into the back of the net, giving the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead. This marked Johnston's 12th goal of the season. Endicott quickly responded as Maddy Dangler took her second shot on goal, which was again saved by Wexler. The Gulls managed another defensive save when Natalia Correia stopped Kaczka from doubling WNE's lead. The Golden Bears took a 1-0 lead into halftime, having outshot the Gulls 5-3 in the frame, while Endicott's Minickene made four saves.
Endicott took control of the offensive attack in the third quarter. Four minutes into the frame, EC's Meg Arnette had a shot turned aside by Wexler. The Gulls earned five penalty corners in the third quarter, while Western New England was held to none. Endicott leveled the score at one midway through the third quarter when the CNE's leading scorer, Tori Swanson, netted the tying goal with an assist from Kathleen Reissfelder. After 45 minutes of play, the score was tied at one. Wexler made three saves in the quarter as Endicott pressed for more in the fourth quarter.
Five minutes into the fourth quarter, Endicott took their first lead of the game when Lily Farnham scored after getting past the WNE defense and goalkeeper, giving the Gulls a 2-1 advantage. Endicott maintained possession for much of the fourth quarter, and Western New England struggled to generate shots in the second half, ultimately falling 2-1. The Gulls finished conference play with a perfect 5-0 record, spoiling the Golden Bears' senior day.
