BANGOR, MAINE (November 2, 2024) – The Western New England football team fell in overtime on Saturday afternoon in Conference of New England (CNE) play to the Eagles of Husson University, dropping a 49-42 contest in what was an offense-filled game. Records:
  • Western New England: 4-4, 1-2 CNE
  • Husson University: 6-2, 3-0 CNE
How it Happened:

Western New England kicked the ball away to start the first quarter of the game, electing to receive in the second half. The WNE defense started on the field and forced the Eagles off the field after a nine-play drive resulted in no points for Husson, allowing Western New England their first opportunity on offense. The first drive quickly piled up yardage for the Golden Bears as Pat Harrigan snagged a 45-yard catch, followed by a 29-yard catch to Greg Perry from QB Brady Lafferty. The Golden Bears found the end zone shortly after when Paul Gorry rushed in a two-yard touchdown, giving Western New England a 7-0 lead, following a successful extra point from Chris Digiacomo. Husson wasted just 42 seconds before tying the game when QB Max Clark found Nason Berthelette for a 47-yard touchdown pass. The score remained 7-7 after one quarter of play, with WNE running for just nine yards in the opening quarter while Husson totaled 94 yards.

Husson took their first lead of the game quickly to start the second quarter when an 18-yard touchdown pass from Clark to Berthelette connected again, giving the Eagles a 14-7 lead. The Golden Bears answered Husson's 14 straight points with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Lafferty to Pat Harrigan, evening the score at 14. Western New England forced Husson off the field on their next drive as Maurice Henlon, Malcom Wilson-Toliver, and Ben Caulfield all made key tackles in the sequence. Lafferty continued to fire through the air as the senior found De'Andre Harris for a 57-yard touchdown pass on a two-play drive, regaining a seven-point lead for WNE, 21-14. The Golden Bears defense could not hold the lead for long, as Husson responded with 3:04 left in the second quarter when Jed Lober ran into the end zone from one yard out, evening the score at 21. The half ended with that score, as neither team capitalized on a final drive to take the lead. Western New England threw for 180 yards in the second quarter, a single-quarter high this season.

The Golden Bears received the ball to open the third quarter but could not come away with a score after a seven-play, 33-yard drive resulted in a punt. Husson followed with a punt of their own after Wilson-Toliver kept the Eagles off the scoreboard. The Eagles scored their third passing touchdown of the afternoon when Max Clark found Cam Holmes for a 24-yard score on a quick two-play drive, taking advantage of a WNE turnover. Husson's lead did not last long, as the Golden Bears answered with a three-yard rushing touchdown from Ryan Carlson, tying the game at 28. With 3:48 left in the third quarter, Clark tossed his fourth touchdown pass
of the game, his second to Holmes, who scored on a 55-yarder to give Husson the lead again, 35-28. The score remained after Husson threw for 108 yards in the quarter.

WNE got a stop to open the fourth quarter against the Husson offense, as Tyler Reinke recorded two key tackles. The Eagles went for it on fourth and five but threw an incomplete pass on a breakup by JJ Josefik, getting the WNE offense back onto the field. Western New England tied the game on their first offensive drive of the fourth quarter as Brady Lafferty found Callaghan Daskam for a 31-yard score, leveling the game at 35. Western New England drove down the field in 2:19, using seven plays for 77 yards, with Cam LaPierre, Ryan Larson, and Daskam all contributing catches. Husson scored again on their next drive after a 64-yard kickoff return set them up for a 13-yard touchdown pass from Clark to Dom Wilson, giving Husson a 42-35 lead. The back-and-forth game saw WNE even the score at 42 after Matt LaMontagne rushed for 36 yards, followed by an 18-yard touchdown pass from Lafferty to De'Andre Harris. Neither team scored again to end the quarter, as Husson's Brayden Trombly intercepted a pass late in the fourth with the Golden Bears nearly in field goal position to win the game, forcing overtime.

Husson picked up the first possession in overtime, starting 25 yards out. The Eagles had no problem scoring, getting another rushing touchdown from Jed Lober to take a 49-42 lead. Needing a touchdown to extend the game, the Golden Bears failed to convert, seeing a fourth-and-six pass go incomplete, as Western New England fell 49-42 in overtime.

Coaches Corner:
  • Head Coach Jason Lebeau commended the Husson offense following the game, mentioning their lack of turnovers on the offensive side of the ball. "It was a back and forth game from the get go. In the end, they ended up making more plays than us to win in overtime. Their offense didn't make many mistakes today and you have to give them credit for that. A couple big plays today made the difference in the final score."
