How it Happened:
The first-round contest began with Molly McLaughlin in net for the Golden Bears and Samantha MacCormack in net for the Gulls. The Gulls pressured the Golden Bears early. That pressure allowed for the ball to be sent in towards the WNE net. WNE could not clear it, and Riley Rischitelli would send the ball crashing into the back of the net to give Endicott the early 1-0 lead. Immediately after the goal, WNE had a free-kick opportunity from Abby Free crash off the crossbar. That was immediately followed by a shot from WNE going wide of the goal. The teams traded possession for the next fifteen minutes until Endicott had the next opportunity. It was a shot that went wide of the net but was knocked out of bounds by WNE and became a corner kick for Endicott. WNE would counter with a chance on their attacking half of the field. They had a corner kick in the 26th minute and then a shot from Isabella Montalvo in the 27th minute, which was saved by MacCormack. The teams traded possession some more after that. WNE had the next shot in the 37th minute. Then, Gabrielle Klindtworth had a shot saved by Molly McLaughlin in the 40th minute. That was the final major opportunity of the first half, and Endicott led 1-0 at the end of the half. The first-half stats saw WNE leading in shots 4-3 and fouls 6-5. Endicott led in shots on goal 2-1. Both teams had one save and one corner kick opportunity.
The second half saw a similar style of play as the first half. Riley Rischitelli had the first shot of the second half. Molly McLaughlin made the save in the 50th minute. Lindsay Reidy had a shot on goal in the 56th minute. MacCormack made a save to keep the Gulls in the lead. The 63rd minute saw WNE with another corner kick chance. However, Endicott cleared the attempt. Then, in the 65th minute, the Gulls struck once again. Riley Rischitelli found Morgan Hubert with a pass. Hubert would then send a shot past the WNE goalie and into the back of the net to give Endicott the 2-0 lead. WNE tried to respond. However, Endicott had a corner kick chance in the 69th minute and a shot in the 77th minute. WNE would control possession for a little while before Endicott would take the ball away and have shots towards goal. Then, after trading possession with Endicott for a while, Abby Free had the final shot of the game and of WNE's season in the 90th minute. The shot was on goal, but McCormack made the save to secure the 2-0 Endicott victory. The final stats saw Endicott leading in shots on goal 4-3 and saves 3-2. WNE had more fouls, 10-5. Both teams had two corner-kick opportunities and six total shots.
Coach's Corner
The women's soccer head coach, Kristin Hensinger, was asked what Hensinger thought about the season as a whole and what Hensinger will miss about the group that is graduating from the team this year. "I'm so proud of this group of women. This was a great season, even though it didn't end the way we hoped. The leadership of this graduating class will be missed. They epitomize what it means to be a Golden Bear and have set the bar high for those that follow," Hensinger mentioned.
