SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 9, 2024) – The Western New England men's wrestling team hosted the Springfield City Championships on Saturday morning with American International College (AIC), Springfield College, and Springfield Technical Community College (STCC), going 2-1 overall against the squads to open the season with two dual wins.
How it Happened (vs. AIC):
The Golden Bears came away with a win right away in the 125 lb. weight class as first year Joe Weikel would pin AIC's Jack Sullivan in just 52 seconds, giving the Golden Bears a quick 6-0 match lead. AIC would come back for three points on a decision victory in the 133 lb. weight class, while
Austin Monteiro would pick up a massive six points for the Golden Bears in the 141 lb. weight class, needing extra time to come away with a pinfall victory over AIC's Aaron Morocho to claim victory, putting the Golden Bears ahead 12-3.
James Linder would wrestle a close bout with AIC's Cqari Bactoe though would eventually come away with the 149 lb. weight class win, a 10-8 decision, adding three more points for Western New England.
Colin Carlin would pick up a win for WNE in the 157 lb. weight class over Joshua Sharron, a tech-fall victory 20-4 in 6:33, picking up five more points for Western New England.
Cameron Hines would continue his dominance on the mat, coming away with a close but sturdy victory, 4-2.
Nicholas Baccala earned a major decision victory for the Golden Bears in the 174 lb. weight class over AIC's Teghan McConnell, a 15-1 decision.
Spencer Dickinson would round out the wins for the Golden Bears on a forfeit from AIC, as Western New England earned a 33-12 victory over the Yellow Jackets.

How it Happened (vs. STCC):
The first five matches for Western New England in their second match would favor the Golden Bears, who quickly took a big lead over the Rams.
Beniamino Dicocco picked up a win in the opening weight class over Cameron Cardona on a pinfall in 4:25 to pick up the first six WNE points.
Trevor Young would add six more of his own in the 133 lb. weight class, defeating Justin Muller on a pinfall in 2:29.
Ayden Cheng would follow suit as WNE picked up pins on their first three matches overall in the match as Cheng would take down Joshua Javillonar in 6:06. In the 149 lb. weight class,
James Linder would pick up a forfeit victory for the Golden Bears. The longest match came in the 157 lb. weight class when WNE's
Tristan Julian picked up an 18-11 decision win in the 157 lb. weight class to earn WNE three more points. From there, both Max Bluhm and
Michael Bluhm would take forfeit wins, while
Aidan DeLuca would grab a pinfall in 0:51 seconds to take Western New England to a 45-12 victory over STCC.

How It Happened (vs. Springfield College)
The Pride got off to a quick start over the Golden Bears, coming away with wins in the 174 and 184 lb. weight classes to open with a 12-0 lead.
Charles Maloy continued his excellence from last weekend's tournament victory and turned that into a win over SC's Casey Allen on a decision 7-1 to earn Western New England three points. Springfield would then rip off the next three matches, 285, 125, and 133, to come away with a big 26-3 lead. The Golden Bears would press and would win the final four matches of the contest, though it would not be enough to defeat the Pride as Springfield College knocked off WNE 26-20.
Austin Monteiro notched a sudden victory over Ryan Kozdra 4-1 in the 141 lb. weight class.
Peter Charnley picked up a 5-3 decision win over Luke Temple at 149,
Matthew Rodriguez claimed a forfeit victory, and
Cameron Hines picked up a massive tech-fall win, 19-1, to come away with five points overall for WNE. The Golden Bears would drop the match despite picking up the final four wins of the weight class.
