Five Golden Bears Place In Top Four At Scott Viera Open

BRISTOL, R.I. (December 14, 2024) – The Western New England men's wrestling team wrapped up the 2024 portion of their schedule on Saturday afternoon at the Scott Viera Open at Roger Williams University, placing five in the top four of their respective weight classes. 

How It Happened: 125 lbs.
In the 125 lb. weight class, Western New England's Beniamino Dicocco would earn a bye in the round of 32 to get into the round of 16 quickly. In the round of 16, the WNE first-year would be dropped on a major decision by Bridgewater State's Sei Dolomengi, which would send Dicocco into the consolation bracket. There, Dicocco would battle Dan Hickey of Roger Williams University, taking down Hickey quickly in the match before grabbing a pinfall win in 2:36 to continue on in the weight class. Dicocco's next match would see him pick up a convincing 17-1 technical fall victory over Springfield College's Hunter Sanchez, coming away with the win with just 19 seconds remaining in the match to move into the consolation of four match. In the match, the first-year would take down teammate Clayton O'Connor on a near 5-4 decision to move into the consolation semifinals round. Dicocco would get his revenge on Deolomengi and would come away with a 10-6 decision win to get into the third place bout match in the weight class. In the final match of the event, Dicocco would snag a convincing 19-3 technical fall victory in 6:16 to pick up a third-place finish overall in the 125 lb. weight class.

How it Happened: 133 lbs.
Austin Mitrosky would battle in five matches on the afternoon and would come away with a third-place finish in the weight class. The WNE first-year picked up a 14-12 decision win over Ariel Escalante of Springfield College in his first match of the afternoon. A major decision win would be next for Mitrosky, this time coming over Trey Kaupp over Roger Williams University, continuing on in the championship bracket. Mitrosky would fall in the semifinals of the 133 lb. weight class on a pinfall decision, now moving into the consolation bracket. Mitrosky would defeat Ariel Escalante again, this time in the consolation semifinal round, which moved Mitrosky to the third place bout. In the final match of the afternoon in the weight class, Mitrsoki would come away with an 8-3 victory, getting a takedown in the third period to ice the match to take third place overall in the weight class.

How it Happened: 174 lbs.
CJ Glaropoulos opened the weight class with a bye to automatically move into the round of 16 event.  Glaropoulos's first head-to-head match would be a pinfall win over Rome Smith of Roger Williams University, moving into the quarterfinals of the weight class. Glaropoulos would then take a victory in the quarterfinal round over Stevens Technical Institute's Chris Piazza. All three of Glaropoulos's points would come in the third period to come away with a victory. Glaropoulos picked up a semifinal victory over Nick Rogers of Springfield College to get into the championship match of the weight class, coming away with an 11-2 major decision win in the semi round. Facing off against Michael Schliem of Johnson & Wales, Glaropoulos would fall on a pinfall decision in the championship match to take a second-place finish overall in the weight class.

How it Happened: 174 lbs. 
David Lisk battled in six total matches on the afternoon to come away with a fourth place finish in the 174 lb. weight class. Lisk opened the round in the second bout of the morning with a 6-4 decision win over Branden Bulatao of Stevens Tech. Lisk would fall short in his second match of the day as Nick Rogers of Springfield College would pick up a technical fall win to move Lisk into the consolation bracket. There, Lisk shined, opening with a bye before defeating Gabriel Thomasson on a 15-0 technical fall in the first consolation of eight match. In the second consolation of eight round, Lisk would defeat Ian Flanagan of Stevens Tech on a 9-2 decision. Lisk dropped Flanagan twice in the match to move into the first of two consolation of four matches. In the first, Lisk would have no trouble defeating Braden Gray of Castleton University, picking up a 20-2 technical fall victory in just 4:29. Looking to get into the third place bout, Lisk would come away with a close revenge victory over Nick Rogers, coming away with a 9-8 win. Lisk would go ahead early before a near pin would get Rogers back into the match, though it would not be enough, sending Lisk into the third place bout. Lisk would drop the third place bout due to a six-match limit, coming away with a fourth place finish overall.

How it Happened: 184 lbs.
Michael Bluhm nearly ran the table in the 184 lb. weight class for the Golden Bears, coming away with a second-place finish overall. Bluhm recorded a bye in his opening match before coming away with quick work of Drew Downey of the University of Rhode Island, picking up a pinfall in just 38 seconds. Bluhm would then come away with a technical fall victory 18-2 over Alex Fogarty of Maine Maritime Academy. In the semifinal round of the weight class, Bluhm would pick up a close 4-3 decision win over Castleton's Corbin Maraia to get into the championship bout of the weight class. Bluhm would fall just short in the championship bout as the match would go the distance, though Kyell Roper would take down the WNE junior 9-2 on a decision.

Additional Successes:
Five other Golden Bears came away with matches in the consolation semifinal round. Joseph Weikel would go 3-2 overall on the day in the 125 lb. weight class for Western New England. In the 133 lb. weight class, Antonio Intintoli would record two wins in four matches overall to reach the cons. semifinal round. James Linder was successful in the 149 lb. weight class for the Golden Bears, also coming away with two wins in four matches. Colin Carlin battled in six matches on the afternoon for the Golden Bears, coming away with a 4-2 record overall, battling to the consolation semifinal round. Finally, Fitzgerald Jordan would round out the 165 lb. weight class with two wins in four matches, becoming the fifth Golden Bear on the day to reach the semifinal round of the consolation bracket.
