Men’s Wrestling Takes Down Norwich On Senior Day

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 17, 2024) – The Western New England men's wrestling team honored their senior class of 2024 on Saturday morning before coming back to take a 28-22 victory over the Cadets of Norwich University to close out the regular season with a win.

How it Happened:

The Golden Bears picked up victories in five weight classes on Saturday morning. Austin Monteiro (141 lbs.), Peter Charnley (149 lbs.), Cameron Hines (157 lbs.), Sean Monteiro (174 lbs.), and Griffin Ostrom (197 lbs.) were all on the winning side for the blue and gold.

WNE would start the morning with a victory in the 157 lb. weight class when Cameron Hines pinned Will Kisatsky in 1:55 to give Western New England a quick 6-0 lead. Sean Monteiro would follow with a TF victory, 17-2, as the Golden Bears would extend their lead to 11-3 in the match. After the Cadets put up six points in the 184 lb. weight class, Griffin Ostrom would come around and take those six points back and put them on WNE's side, grabbing a pinfall victory in 1:20, which gave WNE a 17-9 lead in the match.

Norwich would come around and take the next three matches of the day, defeating WNE in the 285 lb., 125 lb., and 133 lb. weight classes. The Golden Bears would see themselves down 22-17 in the match after those three straight losses, though Austin Monteiro easily took down Norwich's James Hoyt on a 17-1 decision, while Peter Charnley would follow with a fall victory in 2:11 to finish the match with two victories that pushed WNE men's wrestling over the Cadets by a final score of 28-22.
