Men’s Wrestling Welcomes Back Alums in First Home Match of 2023-2024

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 9, 2024) – The Western New England men's wrestling team fell to the visiting Engineers of Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Friday night, though not before the Golden Bears men's wrestling program welcomed back their distinguished alums as part of Alumni Appreciation Night in the team's first home match of the season.

How it Happened:
Western New England would fall in the opening match of the night, with WPI taking the 141 lb. weight class on a pinfall in 6:27 to take the first six points of the night. Peter Charnley came away with WNE's first win in the 149 lb. weight class on Friday, defeating WPI's Conor Doran on a major decision, 13-3, to give the Golden Bears four points back in the match. Cam Hines topped WPI's Zachary Rioux on an 8-0 major decision count as WNE took an 8-4 match lead.

Sean Monteiro would continue the winning streak for the Golden Bears, defeating Ryan Hsu in the 165 lb. weight class on yet another major decision win for Western New England, this time on a 22-11 count. WPI came around to win the 174 and 184 lb. weight classes, grabbing seven points in the process.

Griffin Ostrom took Nicolas LeSieur down to the mat with a pinfall victory at 197 to grab Western New England six points, taking an 18-13 lead in the match. From there, WPI would come around with three straight victories, at 285, 125, and 133, to take the match by a final score of 25-18.
