AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 17, 2024) – The Western New England baseball team took their first two wins down South, coming away with a doubleheader sweep over the Rams of Framingham State University on Sunday afternoon. WNE took game one 11-1 and followed up with a win in game two by a score of 4-2.

How it Happened: Game 1
The Rams would grab their first run of their Florida trip in the top of the first inning of Western New England starting pitcher
Jared Kuryan when the senior would throw a wild pitch after a triple would occur in the inning while Framingham's Burbank would score. The Golden Bears would come around with their first two runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning after the blue and gold loaded the bases and grabbed two RBI walks to take a 2-1 lead.
Trey Young opened the inning with a double, while
Cody Waterbury and
Sean Jamieson would reach to fill the bases.
Andrew Florek and
Aaron Cole both took RBI walks to give WNE their lead of the morning.
Neither team would get the bats moving in the second or third inning, while the Golden Bears cracked the Framingham pitching again in the bottom of the fourth inning to score three more runs. WNE opened the bottom of the fourth inning with four straight hits:
Aaron Cole with a single,
Henry Schowerer with a single,
Canon Marshall with a single, and a two-RBI double from
Young, giving the Golden Bears a 5-1 lead after four innings of play.
Framingham would be shut down by
Jared Kuryan through the middle innings heading into the sixth, where back-to-back singles would threaten the WNE starter, though
Kuryan would bear down and educe the 3-6-3 double play to get out of the inning unscathed. WNE would reward their starter with an explosive six-run sixth to put the game on ice.
Jack Loftus recorded a two-RBI double, followed up by a sacrifice fly from
Andrew Florek, giving WNE an 8-1 lead. The Golden Bears weren't done there, as
Canon Marshall would clear the bases with a three-RBI double to left field, giving Western New England an 11-1 lead.
Kuryan would lock down the top of the seventh, sending the Golden Bears to their first victory on their Florida trip.
Inside the Lines:
- Jared Kuyran would go the distance for the Golden Bears in the seven-inning game, giving up nine hits and just one run while striking out seven.
- Offensively, WNE recorded just seven hits though scored 11 runs, thanks to 12 walks from Framingham State pitching.
- Trey Young and Canon Marshall recorded two hits each in the game, with Marshall coming away with four RBIs, a career high.
- The Golden Bears recorded four extra base hits today.
How it Happened: Game 2
Switching to the away team in game two, the Golden Bears would take advantage of Framingham State pitching right away. With two outs,
Cody Waterbury connected on his team leading fourth home run of the season, giving WNE a 1-0 lead. After
Sean Jamieson would reach on an error in the next at-bat,
Jack Loftus would send the ball over the fences to center field, giving the Golden Bears a 3-0 lead. Framingham State would grab a run in the bottom half of the first inning on a groundout, though the Rams left two aboard, still keeping WNE in front.
The Rams came around with an RBI walk in the bottom of the second to pull within one run of a tie after
Cam Heeman was called into duty.
Heeman would strand the bases loaded to end the threat from Framingham. WNE would take a 3-2 lead after two innings. Both teams would leave two runners aboard in the third and fourth innings to keep the score at 3-2. Western New England came away with an insurance tally in the top of the fifth inning after
Andrew Florek came through with an RBI single up the middle of the infield, scoring
Cody Waterbury, who walked and then advanced two bases on a failed pickoff attempt. WNE took a 4-2 lead after five innings of play. The Golden Bears would rely on
Troy Donohue in the sixth and seventh to shut down the Rams, which is exactly what the senior did, which gave Western New England a 4-2 win in the second game of the doubleheader, sweeping the Rams.

- The Golden Bears used a three-run first inning to get by the Rams on a 4-2 win.
- Cam Heeman came in relief, going 3.1 innings, giving up just one hit and no runs while striking out two.
- Troy Donohue closed the final two innings for WNE, giving up just two hits and three strikeouts.
- Offensively, Jack Loftus led WNE in game two with two hits in three at-bats.
