Florek, Villecco Shine, Baseball Uses 19 Free Bases to Blow Out William Paterson 21-5

DAVENPORT, Fla. (March 20, 2024) – The Western New England baseball team exploded for a ten run third inning and followed that up with an eight run fourth to blow the doors wide open on the Pioneers of William Paterson University, grabbing a 21-5 victory on Wednesday afternoon.

Records:
  • Western New England: 6-5
  • William Paterson: 5-9
How it Happened:

Tanner Wall would make the start for the Golden Bears and would see the Pioneers grab the early 1-0 lead on an RBI double as the Pioneers would come away with two extra base hits to start the top of the first. Western New England would not be fazed by the early run given up; in fact, the blue and gold took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the first inning, getting two hits when Paul Villecco and Kohtaro Shimada recorded singles to open the inning. Three straight base on balls assessed to the Golden Bears would send two runners to the plate, giving the Golden Bears the 2-1 lead after one full inning of play.

Western New England would bat around their lineup in the bottom of the third and then some, scoring ten runs on six hits while the Pioneers recorded one error in the inning. WNE would walk four times in the inning, while Aaron Cole's walk forced in the first run of the inning, giving WNE a 3-1 lead. Henry Schowerer would smack a deep ball that bounced on the warning track and over the fence for a ground-rule double, scoring two. Johnny Bova would follow suit, crushing a double of his own to score two more Golden Bears as Western New England took a 7-1 lead. Shimada would join in on the hit parade in the inning, grabbing a bunt single to third base to score another. After an error by WP to score another, Sean Jamieson would slam a triple to center field to clear the bases, while Andrew Florek's groundout would send Jamieson home, giving Western New England a 12-1 lead at the end of the third inning.

William Paterson would respond after giving up the crooked number in the bottom of the third and came away with two big flys in the top of the fourth that cut into Western New England's lead, seeing WNE take a seven-run lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. In the bottom of the inning, Western New England would put
up eight more runs and would strike for their first 20-run game of the season. WNE would be sparked in the inning by Andrew Florek, who hit a two-RBI single to left field with the bases loaded, while an error on the play would score another, clearing the bases to give Western New England a 17-5 lead. Paul Villecco would come up with a two-RBI double to center field to force two runs home and put the 20 spot up on the scoreboard for the blue and gold. Western New England would take a 15-run lead heading into the fifth.

In the fifth, Tyler Curtis would replace Wall, who went the first four innings, giving up seven hits and five runs while walking one and striking out four. Curtis would set the Pioneers down in order in the top of the fifth, while Western New England would add another run in the bottom half of the inning when Florek came through again for another RBI, this time on a single up the middle, giving Western New England a 21-5 lead.

William Paterson would threaten in the top of the sixth with the bases loaded with two outs, though Curtis would come away with the final out of the inning, grabbing a putout to himself, keeping the score massively in favor of WNE. Canon Marshall would finish out the top of the seventh inning on the hill before the game was called, with Western New England coming away with the 21-5 victory.
