AMHERST, Mass. (March 27, 2024) – The Western New England baseball team could not make a complete comeback on Wednesday afternoon at Amherst College, coming back from four runs down in the eighth inning to score four of their own to only let up four more to the Mammoths in the bottom of the eighth, falling by a final score of 11-7.

How it Happened:
After the first two batters of the game were set down by Amherst pitching, the Golden Bears were able to put together a two out rally and collect an early 2-0 lead when Cody Waterbiry would turn a walk into a run on
Jack Loftus's RBI double while
Sean Jamieson would drive in
Loftus on an RBI single up the middle to get the blue and gold rolling early. Amherst would come around for a run in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single back into center field off Western New England starting pitcher
Tanner Wall, cutting the Golden Bears lead in half.
The Mammoths would come around to tie the game in the bottom of the second inning when the hosts got their first home run of the game, a solo shot, evening the score at two. Amherst would come around for three runs in the bottom of the third, all off
Wall, after the Golden Bears left two runners on base on one hit in the top of the inning. The Mammoths would score runs on an RBI single, RBI groundout, and fielding error by Western New England, costing the Golden Bears an extra run and seeing Amherst take a 5-2 lead after three innings of play.
Amherst would grab one more run in the bottom of the fourth inning before the Golden Bears would score again, seeing the home team take a 6-2 lead. In the top of the fifth, Western New England would take advantage of
Paul Villecco's leadoff double and three walks issued by Amherst pitching, giving the Golden Bears a run on a walk to
Jamieson, giving Amherst a 6-3 lead after five innings of play. Amherst would get Western New England's run in the fifth back in the bottom of the sixth when the Mammoths grabbed their second home run of the afternoon, giving Amherst a 7-3 lead.
The Golden Bears would make a comeback in the top of the eighth inning and would take advantage of mistakes made by the Mammoths in the field.
Andrew Florek would lead off with a single through the right side of the diamond, while both
Aaron Cole and
Henry Schowerer would reach on walks, loading the bases with no outs.
John Bova would take a walk of his own, which scored another run for Western New England, moving the score to 7-4. The Golden Bears would take advantage of a wild pitch, plating another.
Kohtaro Shimada would record an RBI single inside the infield, plating the third run of the inning for the Golden Bears Cody
Waterbury finished the scoring for the Golden Bears in the top of the inning with a sacrifice fly, tying the score at seven.
Amherst would come away with a four-run inning of their own, leading off the bottom of the eighth inning with a home run off
Canon Marshall, retaking the lead. The Mammoths would continue to score in the inning, coming away with a two-RBI single in the inning to take a 10-7 lead. Amherst would add one more run in the inning to come away with an 11-7 lead, grabbing four runs on three hits in the inning. The Golden Bears would not be able to take advantage of an error in the top of the ninth by Amherst, falling by a final score of 11-7.
Inside the Lines:
- The Golden Bears finished the game with seven runs on eight hits, though would commit three errors in the game.
- Both Kohtaro Shimada and Jack Loftus would record multiple hits for Western New England in the loss.
- Amherst notched ten hits, three big flys, and seven singles in the contest.
- Western New England pitchers gave up 11 runs, ten earned runs, throwing 163 pitches. The Golden Beats pitching staff tossed just one strikeout.
- WNE falls to Amherst for the first time to Amherst since 2015. The Golden Bears have averaged just under ten runs game over six contests against Endicott.
