Men’s Tennis Sweeps Curry, Earns First CCC Win of Season

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 30, 2024) – The Western New England men's tennis team took care of the visiting Colonels of Curry College on Saturday afternoon at Pope Francis Preparatory School, earning their first CCC victory of the season.

How it Happened:

The Golden Bears opened doubles action with a strong showing. Kyle Poccia and Thomas Roche would come away with a clean 8-0 sweep in the third doubles position for the Golden Bears, quickly putting WNE ahead 1-0. Henry Runyan and Nolan Jermain would finish shortly after, earning WNE an 8-1 win in the second doubles spot. Nick Bayer and Michel Abizaid Nunez would finish off the sweep for the Golden Bears in the top doubles spot, winning 8-3 and sweeping Curry 3-0 in doubles action.

In singles, Western New England would take control and never look back. No match would need to go more than two sets, as all six Golden Bears would record sweeps. Nick Bayer opened the singles one spot with a straight 6-0, 6-0 victory over Curry's Bryan Shields. Michel Abizaid Nunez helped Western New England with a 6-1, 6-0 win in the singles two spot. Henry Ruyan grabbed a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Eric Flynn, while Kyle Poccia dominated, 6-1, 6-0, in the singles four positon. Nolan Jermain and Thomas Roche finished in the fifth and sixth singles positions for the Golden Bears, winning 6-1, 6-2, and 6-0, 6-1, respectively. Western New England men's tennis opens conference play with a sweep of Curry, collecting their 15th straight win over the Colonels, including fifth 9-0 decision.
