Trinity Makes Late Comeback, Walks Off WNE Baseball In Ten Innings, 4-3

HARTFORD, Conn. (April 16, 2024) – The Western New England baseball team was just two outs away from closing out a victory on Tuesday afternoon over the hosting Bantams of Trinity College, though Trinity would collect an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth and would lead off the bottom of the tenth with a walk-off home run to sink the Golden Bears, 4-3.

Records:
  • Western New England: 12–13
  • Trinity (Conn.) College: 11-13
How it Happened:

Todd Grammatico would start the game for the Golden Bears and would see trouble come about in the bottom of the first inning, though the sophomore would work out of the jam, getting a fly out to right field to end the inning. Trinity would not miss their opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning, as the Bantams would get a leadoff double and would grab three hits in the innings, two of those doubles and a single to take a 2-0 lead on the Golden Bears after two innings of play.

The Golden Bears would see their first two runners of the top of the third reach when Henry Schowerer reached on an error while Paul Villecco would be walked, putting two runners on with no outs, though the Golden Bears would not be able to come away with a run in the inning, grounding into a double play to end the threat. The Bantams would also put two runners on in the bottom of the third inning, though Grammatico would roll the conventional 5-4-3 double play to get out of the inning unscathed. Western New England would reward their starting pitcher in the top of the fourth when Jack Loftus would single to left center field, which would be followed up with a home run by Sean Jamieson, his second in the last two games, tying the score at two after four innings of play.

After a clean fifth inning with no runs on the board, Western New England would grab their second big fly of the game when Jack Loftus would take the Bantams pitching deep, picking up his fourth home run of the season and giving Western New England the 3-2 lead to start the sixth. Aaron Cole would double to center field in the inning, though the Golden Bears would not be able to string together any additional runs in the inning, taking a one-run lead out of the top of the sixth. Grammatico would work the first 5.2 innings for Western New England, giving up five hits and two runs, both earned, while walking four and striking out two on 90 pitches in the contest. Lucas Kamoen would get the final out of the sixth for the Golden Bears. Neither team would come away with a threat until the top of the ninth inning, when the Golden Bears saw two runners get aboard, Henry Schowerer on a single and John Bova on a walk, though a fielder's choice ground out would end the Golden Bears threat.

In the bottom of the ninth, Western New England would see Trinity come away with back-to-back doubles to even the score at three. Later in the inning, with a runner 90 feet away from winning the contest, Aaron Cole would come in relief of Kamoen and get the final two outs of the inning to send the game to extra innings. Western New England would see Jack Loftus advance to third base with just one out after getting a single and stolen base to start the inning, though WNE would not be able to score in the inning. Trinity would end the game quickly in the bottom of the tenth, grabbing a walk-off home run by William Fran as the Bantams came away with a 4-3 victory.
