WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (April 2, 2024) – The Western New England baseball team recorded a 10-2 win over the Hawks of the University of Hartford on Tuesday afternoon, marking their first ever win in the team's first meeting. All nine starters for the Golden Bears recorded at least one hit, while the blue and gold got excellent starting pitching from
Tanner Wall in the win.

How it Happened:
The Golden Bears used their bats early in the contest and took their first lead of the game in the top of the first.
Paul Villecco would register a walk to open the game, while two batters later, Western New England would pick up a rare inside the park home run by
Cody Waterbury when the senior was able to flare the ball out the center field, which would get past the Hartford outfielder, turning in two runs for the Golden Bears, giving Western New England the early 2-0 lead. WNE's
Tanner Wall would have no problem sitting down the Hawks in order in the bottom of the second inning, getting three groundouts to start the game.
The Hawks would come away with their first run of the ballgame in the bottom of the fourth inning when an RBI double to center field would plate one for the Hawks with two outs in the inning.
Wall would get a groundout to leave one on base for the Hawks in the inning, though Hartford would cut Western New England's lead in half, trailing 2-1. Western New England would come around and take exception to the Hawks run in the bottom of the fourth and would score four runs in the top of the fifth to take a commanding 6-1 lead.
Cody Waterbury would reach on an error, scoring
Paul Villecco, who led off the inning with a walk.
Sean Jamieson would collect a two-RBI double through the right side of the diamond and into right field, scoring two more for the Golden Bears in the inning, while
Kohtaro Shimada would cap off the inning with an RBI double the opposite way, to left field, scoring
Jamieson, giving WNE a 6-1 lead after five innings of play.
The Golden Bears would not be done scoring from there, adding four more runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away. Eight Golden Bears would hit in the inning, with
Shimada, Ryan Montini, and
Canon Marshall all coming away with RBI hits in the inning to give Western New England a 10-1 lead.
Marshall's two-out RBI single would cap off a four-run, five-hit inning for the Golden Bears, and all nine Golden Bears would collect at least one hit in the game following the base knock from the first-year.
Tanner Wall would close the seventh inning by securing his fifth strikeout of the afternoon, throwing 87 pitches in the game and giving up just two runs. WNE's
Troy Donohue locked down the eighth and ninth innings for the Golden Bears, giving up just two hits while striking out two, earning Western New England their eighth win of the season, defeating Hartford by a final score of 10-2.
Inside the Diamond:
- All nine Golden Bears starters had a hand in today's game, recording at least one hit. Sean Jamieson and Kohtaro Shimada came away with a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs each to lead the way.
- Tanner Wall threw seven innings for the Golden Bears, earning his first career collegiate win with Western New England, giving up just six hits and two earned runs while walking one and striking out five Hawks. Wall gave up just a singular extra base hit in the contest.
- Troy Donohue locked up the final two innings of the game for Western New England, throwing two innings and giving up two hits while striking out two Hawks.
- Hartford was doomed by four errors in the contest, though Hawks pitching struck out 14 Golden Bears in the losing effort.
- Each squad left six runners on base in the nine-inning contest.
- This is the first meeting all time between the University of Harford and Western New England. The two teams will meet again this season at Trelease Park on Tuesday, April 23.
