Springfield, Mass. (April 20, 2024) – The Men's Lacrosse team celebrated Senior Day in Golden Bear Stadium as they took on the University of New England. The Golden Bears would blank UNE in the first quarter, scoring eight unanswered goals. UNE would score in the second; however, the Golden Bears would score six, and the score was 14-1 at halftime. The Golden Bear offense slowed down a little in the third, with the score extending to 17-3. The Nor'Easters finished out the game by scoring three unanswered goals to conclude the game at a score of 17-6, with WNE winning the game. Nicholas Campagnone led the Golden Bears with five total points (three goals and two assists). Jonathan Salsbury made four saves to earn the win for the Golden Bears.

How it Happened:
Jonathan Salsbury and Evan Hazard lined up across from each other as the goalies for the Golden Bears and Nor'Easters, respectively. Dylan Hanley would get the scoring started with a goal 1:46 into the game off an assist from James Wrynn. 4:02 into the game, Jack Houlden doubled the lead with a goal assisted by Thomas Labbe. That was the 100th goal of Houlden's Golden Bear career. The Golden Bears had a quick 2-0 lead. Thirty seconds later, Hanley tripled the lead after a pass from Nicholas Campagnone. Brian Madden then netted an unassisted goal to push the score to 4-0. Dylan Hanley would then record a first-quarter hat trick with a goal with 6:39 left in the quarter. Nicholas Campagnone was credited with the assist, and the score was 5-0. 1:25 later, Griffin LaRochelle netted an unassisted goal to put the Golden Bears up by six, and UNE would have to respond with a timeout. With fifty-nine seconds left in the quarter, Jack Houlden scored a second goal, and then, Campagnone scored eleven seconds later off an assist from Dylan Hanley, and the Golden Bears led 8-0 after one-quarter of play. The Golden Bears led in shots 16-1, faceoffs won 5-4, and ground balls 13-9 during the first. The Nor'Easters led 5-1 in saves.
1:47 into the second quarter, Joseph Contino netted an unassisted goal to push the WNE lead to nine. The teams would trade offensive possessions with the goalies and defenses, making it difficult for either team to score the next goal. However, with 8:37 left in the second, Shea Fogarty netted a goal for UNE, assisted by Joe O'Keefe, to make the score 9-1. Quinn Mulcahy would get that goal back for the Golden Bears 14 seconds later. That was Mulcahy's first career Golden Bear goal, with Jack Houlden having the assist. The teams traded opportunities for almost four minutes before Josh Gagnon made the score 11-1 with 4:36 left in the first half. Then, Zachary Mein found Jacob Roy for a goal with 3:22 left in the half. Max Rudgers followed with a goal with 1:53 left to make the score 13-1. Twenty-six seconds later, Jack Houlden had goal number three for the day, and the Golden Bears led 14-1 at the half. The first half saw a stat line that showed the Golden Bears leading in shots 29-5, faceoff wins 11-6, and ground balls 26-17. UNE made more saves in the half, 9-3.
Thirty-eight seconds into the second half, the Golden Bears were called for a penalty. However, the Nor'Easters were not able to capitalize. However, shortly after, the Golden Bears were called for two penalties to give the Nor-Easters a double man-up opportunity. Stephen Fogarty capitalized and gave UNE their second goal of the game with the man-up goal. The Golden Bears were called for a fourth penalty just after the goal. However, UNE would not capitalize on this penalty. The teams would go back and forth for a little while, with Hazard having to make a save. With 7:28 left in the third, Nicholas Campagnone scored the first goal of the second half for the Golden Bears. 1:34 later, Andrew Lawrence notched a second goal of the quarter for UNE after an assist from Sam McGregor to make the score 15-3. With 3:06 left in the quarter, Brian Madden ripped a shot into the back of the net, and that was Madden's 100th career Golden Bear point. Then, with fifty-six seconds left in the quarter, Nicholas Campagnone scored a third goal of the game, and the Golden Bears had a 17-3 lead through three-quarters of play. The third quarter stat line showed the Golden Bears lead in shots 11-5 and ground balls 14-12. The Nor'Easters led in faceoff wins 4-2 and saves 4-0.
UNE made a goalie change to start the final quarter of play. Christian Berluti entered the game, playing goalie. Thirty-nine seconds into the final quarter of play, UNE's Shea Fogarty scored to make the score 17-4. Collin Jackson scored 2:41 later after an assist from Joe O'Keefe. That made the score 17-5. After the teams went back to back-and-forth action for a little while, Kyle Dunn notched the sixth UNE goal. The score was 17-6, with 4:46 remaining. The Nor'Easters were then called for a penalty. However, the Golden Bears could not capitalize with a goal. The game would finish with back-and-forth action. The Golden Bears would defeat the Nor'Easters by a score of 17-6. The final stat line showed the Golden Bears lead in shots 48-20, ground balls 46-36, and faceoff wins 16-11. The Nor'Easters led in saves 16-4.
