Golden Bears Punch Ticket to CCC Tournament with 6-3 Win over Suffolk

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 22, 2024) -  The Western New England men's tennis team needed a victory on Monday afternoon in order to qualify for the upcoming Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament and were able to accomplish the feat, taking a 6-3 match win over the Rams of Suffolk University to compete in the CCC Tournament this coming weekend.

How it Happened:

The Golden Bears would claim victory in the first finishing match of the afternoon after Kyle Poccia and Thomas Roche came away with an 8-2 victory in the third doubles spot to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead in the match. Suffolk's top doubles pairing would come away with a victory to even the match, defeating WNE 8-5. Western New England would battle in the second doubles position, seeing the match go the distance and needed a final set to determine a winner. The Golden Bears would take the victory after Henry Runyan and Michel Abizaid Nunez recorded an 8-7 (7-5) match victory.

Western New England recorded match victories rather quickly in the third and fourth singles position to take a 4-1 lead in the match. Brandon Greger defeated Hasan Esrawi 6-3, 6-0, while Henry Runyan took a 6-0, 6-2 win for the Golden Bears. Nick Bayer was not long to finish his match in the top singles position for Western New England, grabbing a two-set sweep, 6-4, 6-3, giving WNE a 5-1 lead and an automatic win for the Golden Bears. Nolan Jermain would win the sixth doubles position for the Golden Bears, 6-4, 6-3. Suffolk came away with wins in the final two matches of the afternoon in the second and fifth positions, though it would not be enough for the Rams. The Golden Bears would take a 6-3 victory to automatically earn a spot in the CCC Tournament.
