Jamieson, Shimada, & Montini Collect Three Hits in 13-5 Win Over Hartford

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 23, 2024) – The Western New England baseball team was led by Sean Jamieson, Kohtaro Shimada, and Ryan Montini, who grabbed three hits each in Western New England's 13-5 win over the Hawks of the University of Hartford on Tuesday afternoon.

How it Happened:

Greg Nivison took the ball for the Golden Bears and rolled a double play to start the top of the first to quickly set Hartford down in order. WNE would score their first two runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning after Paul Villecco would take a leadoff walk while John Bova recorded a double down the left field line, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Cody Waterbury would come through with his 100th career RBI on a sac-fly, while a wild pitch would score the two runs in the inning for the Golden Bears, giving the Golden Bears a 2-0 lead. Hartford would come back for a run and cut Western New England's lead in half in the top of the second after the Hawks picked up an RBI double, though Western New England would grab the final out of the inning when Cameron Boardmen attempted to stretch a double into a triple, though Aaron Cole, John Bova, and Cody Waterbury would have a hand in getting the final out of the inning for the Golden Bears.

Western New England plated the third run of the game in the bottom of the second when Ryan Montini came around to score on another Hartford wild pitch, giving Western New England a 3-1 lead. The Golden Bears picked up two hits and three runs in the bottom of the third inning when Ryan Montini would grab a two-RBI double to left center field while Aaron Cole would pop out into an infield fly, and Kohtaro Shimada would head home on heads up base running to extend the Golden Bears lead to 6-1 after three innings.

Nivison would allow one run in the top of the fourth, though would get a ground ball to end the inning with the bases loaded to keep the Hawks at bay, scoring just the one run in the inning. Western New England would respond with the run back in the bottom half of the inning after Sean Jamieson recorded a double to move Jack Loftus to third, who reached on a walk. Kohtaro Shimada would grab an RBI single to right field, giving Western New England a five-run lead, taking a 7-2 lead. Hartford would load the bases in the top of the fifth, though Nivison, the Western New England right-handed hurler, would get another ground out to end the inning and end his outing, going the first five innings.

The Golden Bears would run into trouble in the top of the seventh, still holding on to the five-run lead, when Hartford would come around for three runs off reliver Alex Slezak as Slezak gave up five hits to the Hawks in the inning, seeing Hartford get back in the ball game, trailing just 7-5 heading into the eighth inning. Troy Donohue would take the bats out of the Hawks hands in the top of the eighth inning quickly, going for his third save of the season. Western New England would blow up the game in the bottom of the eighth, coming away with six runs on four hits while taking advantage of a costly error for the Golden Bears. Paul Villecco started the scoring with an RBI sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Shimada, who reached on a single to start the inning. John Bova would hit a routine fly ball to right field, though the Hawks would make a miscue on the putout, allowing two runs to score for Western New England, giving the Golden Bears a 10-5 lead. Tyler Kornacki recorded a hit to keep the inning going, while Jack Loftus loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. Sean Jamieson would quickly clear the bases with a triple down the right field line, giving Western New England a 13-5 lead. Donohue closed out the top of the ninth inning to earn the save in the game, as WNE would go on to defeat Hartford by a final score of 13-5.

Inside the Diamond:
  • WNE erupted for 13 hits in the contest, nine coming from WNE's 5, 6, and 7 hitters. Sean Jamieson, Ryan Montini, and Kohtaro Shimada would all record three hits for the Golden Bears in the win.
  • Greg Nivison collected his first collegiate victory of the season, going the first five innings, giving up four hits and two runs while walking five and striking out two.
  • Western New England took advantage of 14 free bases on the night, coming away with ten walks and four hit by a pitch from the Hawks.
  • WNE defeated Hartford for the second time this season, scoring double digits in both games.
